The Future of Alexander Isak and Premier League Transfers
The future of Alexander Isak has been a significant topic of discussion this summer, with former England captain Wayne Rooney suggesting it may be increasingly difficult for him to remain at Newcastle United.
The Magpies turned down a £110 million bid from Liverpool for the Swedish striker on August 1, yet the 25-year-old remains eager to join the Reds.
On his new BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, the ex-Manchester United striker expressed that it might be in everyone's best interest for Isak to move on from Newcastle.
"Isak is a top player," Rooney stated. "It is very challenging for him to stay at Newcastle. I've seen many fans expressing that he has approached this situation the wrong way. You can't be sure what discussions are happening at the board level, but you would assume they want him to remain. Losing Isak would be a significant setback for Newcastle as they aim to build a competitive squad for the league."
He continued, "Given the financial fair play regulations, it might actually benefit Newcastle to sell him to free up funds for acquiring more players, thereby strengthening the squad. For Isak, this is a chance to join Liverpool, who have just claimed the Premier League title—a monumental opportunity for him."
Rooney, who experienced his share of transfer rumors during his career, recalled a time when he was linked with a move to Manchester City while at Manchester United. The backlash from fans was intense, with some even showing up outside his house in the middle of the night.
"It was tough; we had a group of fans outside my house in balaclavas at 3 AM," he recounted. "It was frightening. My wife, Coleen, was up feeding our son and called the police. I went downstairs to confront them, not knowing they thought their actions would influence my decision to sign a new deal the next day."
"Frustration can lead to banter, and while fans may voice their opinions during matches, some actions, like showing up at players' homes, cross the line. That is simply unacceptable."

Newcastle Eyes Benjamin Sesko
It appeared that Newcastle was preparing for Isak's potential departure by pursuing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. However, Sesko ultimately opted to join Manchester United in a deal worth £73.7 million.
The 22-year-old forward netted 39 goals in 87 appearances for RB Leipzig, with 27 of those coming in 64 Bundesliga matches. Currently the top scorer under 23 in Europe's top five leagues, Rooney believes Sesko's move could prove to be one of the best signings in the Premier League this summer.
"I really like Sesko," Rooney commented. "He possesses all the necessary attributes—he is tall, can head the ball, is strong, quick, and adept with both feet. However, moving to Manchester United brings a different level of pressure."
Rooney also expressed high expectations for Viktor Gyokeres, who transferred to Arsenal from Sporting this summer. "I faced Gyokeres when he played for Coventry. He understands the English culture, but the expectations at Arsenal, who have struggled to find a consistent forward, are immense. The good news is that Arsenal fans will appreciate his hard work and energy, along with his goal-scoring ability."
Manchester United's Midfield Needs Reinforcement
Sesko became United's third major attacking signing, following Matheus Cunha, acquired for £62.5 million, and Bryan Mbeumo, who joined for £65 million plus £6 million in add-ons. Rooney sees this as a much-needed revitalization of United's attack after their disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
However, the former striker believes that a midfielder is still necessary to ensure his old club can compete effectively in the league. United has been linked with Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.
"They needed to refresh their attack," Rooney said. "The previous attacking lineup seemed to lack confidence, and some players appeared disinterested. Credit to Ruben Amorim for addressing these issues. The new attacking players will make a significant impact, but I still believe they need a holding midfielder to help break up play and allow the forwards to shine."
"Baleba is an incredible player—physically strong and skilled on the ball. Manchester United needs someone who can disrupt the opposition's play and enable their attacking players to secure victories."
Jack Grealish's Loan to Everton
Another noteworthy transfer this summer is Jack Grealish's loan move from Manchester City to Everton. The England playmaker joined City from Aston Villa for a British record fee of £100 million in August 2021, making over 150 appearances and winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League, and the FA Cup.
However, he fell out of favor last season, starting only seven league matches and being excluded from the squad for the Club World Cup in the United States.
"This is a fantastic signing for both parties," Rooney remarked. "Jack is a difference-maker. After struggling for playing time last year and losing his spot in the England squad, this loan to Everton is an excellent opportunity for him to prove himself."
Rooney, who began his career at Everton, shared that he had a conversation with Grealish before the latter's move while dining out. "We talked about the number 18 shirt, which was available. He recalled that Paul Gascoigne wore it, and then I did too. Now he has taken it, which is wonderful."
"I also discussed the club's values with him. Everton fans expect hard work from their players, and there is no doubt Jack will deliver that, along with the quality that will endear him to the supporters."
