Togo Midfielder Samuel Asamoah Suffers Serious Neck Injury in Match
Togo midfielder Samuel Asamoah sustained a severe neck injury in a collision with a pitch-side advertising board during a match in China, raising concerns about the possibility of paralysis.
The 31-year-old player, who represents the second-tier Chinese club Guangxi Pingguo, collided head-first with an LED advertising panel after being pushed by an opponent on Sunday.
On Monday, Guangxi Pingguo reported that Asamoah is at risk of "high-level paraplegia" due to multiple fractures in his neck and significant nerve damage.
Paraplegia refers to the inability to voluntarily move the lower parts of the body.
The club has confirmed that Asamoah underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition.
"His recovery progress will be announced in due course after follow-up examinations," the club stated.
In the match, Chongqing Tonglianglong midfielder Zhang Zhixiong received a yellow card for pushing Asamoah into the advertising board.
Asamoah, who spent most of his career in Belgium before joining Guangxi Pingguo in 2024, has earned six caps for the Togo national team.
