Tottenham Triumphs Over Everton with Van de Ven's Double
Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur extended their unbeaten streak on the road in the Premier League, handing Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The Toffees had previously won all five of their matches at their new home, Bramley-Moore Dock, after leaving Goodison Park, where they had played for 133 years, at the end of last season.
However, Spurs captain Van de Ven capitalized on two corner kicks in the first half, putting Everton's impressive record in jeopardy. The home side was unable to recover, and Pape Matar Sarr, assisted by former Everton forward Richarlison, added a third goal to secure the victory.
Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized just five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, connecting with a powerful header from an Everton corner that found the back of the net.
Despite a series of missed opportunities from Beto, Tottenham's goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made several crucial saves, ensuring that Spurs maintained their unbeaten run in five away Premier League matches.
However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened, prompting referee Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor. The review concluded that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with Vicario, leading to the goal being disallowed.
This victory propels Thomas Frank's side to third place in the Premier League, five points behind their north London rivals and league leaders, Arsenal.
Everton remains in 14th place, sitting six points clear of the relegation zone.
Tottenham Analysis: Van de Ven Shines at Both Ends of the Pitch
Following a lackluster midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where Tottenham managed only two shots on target, manager Thomas Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani to lead the attack instead of former Everton player Richarlison.
Muani struggled to make an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes, but ultimately, his presence was not required.
Centre-back Van de Ven emerged as a formidable attacking threat, scoring the first goal from a well-executed corner routine. Rodrigo Bentancur headed the ball back across the goal, allowing an unmarked Van de Ven to nod it home.
Van de Ven, filling in as captain for the absent Cristian Romero, added his second goal in first-half stoppage time, rising above Jordan Pickford to score again.
Defensively, the Dutchman was equally impressive, forming a strong partnership with Kevin Danso as they effectively dealt with 34 crosses from Everton.
