Wayne Rooney Critiques Half-Time Interviews and International Matches
Wayne Rooney has expressed that Sir Alex Ferguson would not have permitted half-time interviews for players.
During a recent episode of his podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, aired on BBC, Rooney questioned the value of "crazy" interviews conducted during matches.
His comments came after Arsenal's Martin Odegaard participated in a half-time interview with Sky Sports during their Premier League victory over Manchester United last weekend.
Rooney, who played under Ferguson for nine years at Manchester United, believes that the legendary manager would have disapproved of such interviews, despite having conducted them during Champions League matches.
"I know how he would have reacted, and it wouldn’t have been in a nice way, that’s for sure! So there’s no way this would have happened with Alex Ferguson," Rooney stated. "When I signed with DC United, they initially wanted me to do half-time interviews, which I refused. My focus should be on the game and how to improve in the second half."
The former England and Manchester United striker's podcast is broadcast twice weekly on BBC Sounds, YouTube, and iPlayer.
In the latest episode, Rooney also criticized La Liga's decision to allow Barcelona's match against Villarreal to take place in Miami, describing it as "wrong" and asserting it "should never happen."
While one-off matches like the Italian Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup have occurred abroad, Rooney believes it is inappropriate to hold games outside of a club's home territory, especially when they have a dedicated fanbase.
"Television networks and broadcasters will do everything to maximize their investment, but loyal fans travel across the country to support their teams. For them to miss a game, or to incur extra costs to attend a match abroad, is unfair. It’s simply wrong to prioritize financial gain over the fans," he emphasized.
