La Liga Match Cancellation: A Setback for Spanish Football
The cancellation of the overseas La Liga match between Barcelona and Villarreal in the United States represents a significant setback for the competition, according to Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish league.
In August, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) approved plans to relocate Villarreal's fixture against Barcelona to Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on December 20. However, this decision was reversed on Tuesday following a backlash, with top-flight players staging a protest by refusing to move for the first 15 seconds of La Liga matches last weekend.
Tebas expressed his disappointment on social media, stating, "Today, Spanish football has lost an opportunity to advance, project itself globally, and strengthen its future." He criticized the defense of 'tradition' as a narrow-minded perspective, arguing that true traditions of European football are being threatened by decisions from governing bodies that undermine national leagues year after year.
He affirmed that La Liga will continue to work diligently to maintain the competitiveness of Spanish football, standing firm against those who seek to undermine it, while also respecting its roots and ensuring sustainability.
Tebas emphasized that Spanish football deserves to look to the future with ambition rather than fear, and he reiterated the league's commitment to pursuing overseas matches.
Barcelona's coach, Hansi Flick, noted that his players were "not happy" with the initial decision, while Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal described the prospect of an overseas game as a "stain" on the competition.
The announcement of the cancellation came during Villarreal's 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester City in the Champions League. This match would have marked the first time a European top-flight league match was held in the United States, although the Spanish Super Cup has taken place in Saudi Arabia in four of the past five seasons.
Following La Liga's lead, the Italian Football Federation announced plans for an overseas match, with the Serie A fixture between AC Milan and Como scheduled to be played in Perth, Australia, in February.
'Not the end of the story' - Balague
Despite the cancellation, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague believes this is not the end of the matter. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, he said, "As long as Javier Tebas is the head of La Liga, he will strive to secure an overseas game. He views it as a project aimed at enhancing the visibility of Spanish football. It complied fully with federation regulations, and the opposition to the project stemmed from reasons unrelated to regulatory or sporting integrity."
Balague suggested that financial issues were likely the primary reason for the cancellation. He stated, "Perhaps there wasn't enough money, or the financial arrangements were unclear, leading to considerable confusion. Villarreal claimed they wouldn't receive any funds, while Barcelona asserted that they would secure payment as soon as they boarded the plane. There was also uncertainty about how Villarreal had assured that around 5,000 of their fans would travel to Miami and how that would be feasible."
