West Ham Backs Manager Nuno Espirito Santo Amid Relegation Concerns
West Ham United, currently facing the threat of relegation, is committed to supporting manager Nuno Espirito Santo in the upcoming transfer window.
Nuno, who took over from Graham Potter on September 25, has experienced a challenging start, with the team initially going four games without a win. However, they managed to secure one loss in six matches before their current streak of three consecutive defeats placed them third from the bottom of the table, five points behind Nottingham Forest and seven points adrift of the in-form Leeds United.
The looming possibility of relegation to the Championship for the first time in 14 years has intensified pressure on Nuno. The move to the 62,500-capacity London Stadium in 2016 was expected to reduce such risks by increasing revenue, but the current situation has raised concerns.
Despite these challenges, club sources assert their strong backing for Nuno, expressing confidence that he can turn the situation around with the right adjustments in January. They have committed to finding funds for new signings, although the potential sale of Brazilian playmaker Lucas Paqueta, who was prevented from leaving the club last summer, remains uncertain.
While relegation would reduce their rent for the London Stadium to £2 million, the overall financial implications of finishing in the bottom three would be significant.
A critical run of fixtures begins with a match against struggling Brighton on December 30, followed by games against Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland, and local rivals Tottenham and Chelsea, concluding with a trip to Burnley on February 7. These matches are likely to determine West Ham's immediate future.
Although the current internal support for Nuno is strong, sentiments could shift if results do not improve.
In their latest match, West Ham suffered a frustrating defeat to Fulham, where a late mistake by Ollie Scarles allowed Harry Wilson to assist Raul Jimenez for the winning goal in the 85th minute. Nuno expressed disappointment, noting that the team had shown promise in the second half and had created several good attacking opportunities.
“I felt the goal was coming. The fans were behind us, and the energy was there. But in the final moment, we were punished,” Nuno said. He emphasized that while mistakes happen, the focus should be on how the team can respond collectively in their next important match.
Defensive errors have plagued West Ham throughout the season, and the inability to rectify these issues could result in Nuno achieving the worst record of any West Ham manager in the Premier League era, currently averaging just 0.77 points per game.
Despite these struggles, Nuno faces mitigating circumstances. He inherited a team low on confidence and defensively vulnerable, having kept only one clean sheet in the Premier League this season. Since taking over in late September, he has not had the opportunity to sign new players and is instead working with a squad assembled by previous managers Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter.
Only Burnley and Wolves have earned fewer points than West Ham’s total of 10 since Nuno's appointment. In his 13 matches, the team has scored 14 goals and conceded 23.
While Nuno will have the chance to turn things around, history is not in their favor; they have secured just 13 points from 18 Premier League games this season, matching their lowest total at this stage of the league since the 2010-11 season, when they ultimately finished at the bottom of the table.
