William Saliba Signs New Five-Year Contract with Arsenal
Arsenal centre-back William Saliba has announced he has signed a new five-year contract with the club, expressing confidence that manager Mikel Arteta and his staff will help him "become the best" defender in the world.
The 24-year-old France international's previous contract was set to expire in June 2027, and there had been speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.
"The boss is one of the best coaches in the world," Saliba stated. "He has helped me a lot, along with his staff, and I’m thrilled to have them as my coaches. I’m 24 now, and I feel I haven’t reached my peak yet. There’s still much I can improve and contribute to this team, and I know that the coach and his staff will aid me in becoming one of the best defenders in the world and winning trophies."
'We know there is still so much to come from him'
Saliba joined Arsenal from Ligue 1 club Saint-Etienne in July 2019, initially returning to the French side on loan for the 2019-20 season before further loan spells at Nice and Marseille.
He made his Arsenal debut in August 2022 and has since become a crucial member of the squad, making 105 league appearances, scoring six goals, and providing two assists.
Arteta praised Saliba’s growth, saying, "Since joining us, William has improved significantly, embraced responsibility, and built a strong rapport with our supporters and everyone at the club. We know there is still much potential in him, and we will continue to work together with the clear goal of winning major trophies."
Saliba's commitment to Arsenal follows that of his centre-back partner Gabriel Magalhaes, who extended his contract until 2029 in June. The announcement of Saliba's new deal comes after Arsenal's dramatic win against Newcastle United on Sunday, which propelled the Gunners to second place in the Premier League, just two points behind leaders Liverpool.
Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta remarked, "In the last three seasons, William has developed into an exceptional defender, whose composure, intelligence, and physical presence make him one of the best in the world. He will continue to evolve with Arsenal and reach new heights."
'Huge for our country' - Coady
Former Liverpool and Wolves defender Conor Coady, currently with Wrexham, commented on BBC Radio 5 Live, stating that Saliba's new contract is a relief for Arsenal. "Whenever I have faced William Saliba, he has consistently performed beyond his years," Coady said. "When players are nearing the end of their contracts, they hold the power. Arsenal will be relieved that he has chosen to stay."
Coady added, "Having players like Saliba in the Premier League is significant for our country. With clubs like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid interested, it’s tough to turn them down. For him to choose to stay at Arsenal is fantastic for both him and the club."
'A major piece of business for Arsenal'
Saliba's contract extension is seen as a crucial aspect of Arsenal's squad-building efforts led by Andrea Berta over the summer. There was a general sense of confidence among all parties that a deal would be reached, with Saliba expressing hope for a new contract during the pre-season tour in Singapore and Hong Kong.
He is arguably Arsenal's most vital defender, with his partnership with Gabriel Magalhaes considered one of the best in the Premier League. Their presence significantly enhances Arsenal's threat during set-pieces.
The club has successfully secured long-term contracts for most key players, leaving only Bukayo Saka's extension pending. These new contracts signal that the players believe they can achieve the trophies they desire at Arsenal.
