Wolves Face Challenges as Coach Warns of More Pain Ahead
Head coach Rob Edwards has warned that there may be "more pain to come" for Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are currently struggling at the bottom of the Premier League.
The team has managed only two points from their first 15 games, failing to secure a single win. Since taking over from Middlesbrough last month, Edwards, 42, has lost all four of his matches, including a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Manchester United at Molineux on Monday.
During that match, fans expressed their dissatisfaction with the club's ownership, Fosun, by boycotting the first 15 minutes of play.
Wolves will face league leaders Arsenal on Saturday at 20:00 GMT, and they are just two games away from matching Sheffield United's Premier League record of 17 consecutive winless matches, set in the 2020-21 season.
Edwards acknowledged the ongoing struggles, stating, "It’s clear that we will face difficulties for a while longer, so there might be more pain ahead. However, I am energized by the challenge and eager to improve the situation. I believe we have laid a solid foundation and developed a good understanding within the team, which is encouraging. But ultimately, we are judged by our results, and that is what frustrates us. The reality is that the situation was challenging even before my arrival."
Bellegarde Ruled Out Until New Year
Adding to Edwards' challenges, midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde is now expected to be sidelined until February due to a hamstring injury sustained against Manchester United. The Haiti international has played in 14 of Wolves' 15 league matches this season and scored their first league goal since October 26 during the recent game.
Edwards commented, "It was a hamstring injury—he could be out for six weeks or more, which is a significant setback for us." Wolves' current eight-game losing streak has equaled a club record set in the 1981-82 season. They find themselves 13 points adrift of safety and have not won a Premier League match since April.
Edwards emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards, stating, "I’ve been able to demonstrate in meetings what is acceptable and what isn’t. If we fail to meet certain expectations, relegation could become a reality very quickly. I can’t step onto the pitch and do it myself; we can show, train, and demand high standards, but it has to come from the players themselves."
Despite the difficult start, Edwards has received support from executive chairman Jeff Shi, who expressed confidence in an interview with BBC Radio WM. Shi stated he is "95%" certain that Edwards, a former Wolves player with 111 appearances for the club, will remain in his position for the next two to three years.
Edwards added, "We knew it was going to be a tough challenge coming in, and I’ve never claimed otherwise. What excites me is the opportunity to bring in talented individuals. I have a hardworking team that is eager to succeed, and it’s reassuring to know we have the backing of our leadership to make necessary improvements."
