Aaron Ramsey Makes Liga MX Debut with Pumas UNAM
Aaron Ramsey, the captain of the Wales national team, has made his long-awaited debut in Liga MX, nearly two months after joining the Mexican top-flight club Pumas UNAM.
The 34-year-old midfielder entered the match as a second-half substitute during a goalless home draw against Club Puebla at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City.
Sporting the number 10 jersey, Ramsey was substituted in after 62 minutes, marking his first appearance on the field since sustaining a hamstring injury during Cardiff's 2-1 win over Luton on March 11.
Ramsey last represented Wales in September 2024, but he may soon be in contention for selection when manager Craig Bellamy announces the squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan later this week.
Despite facing injuries and a brief stint in management, Ramsey has expressed his desire to continue playing and aim to lead Wales in the World Cup next summer.
He served as interim manager for his hometown club Cardiff City during the final three matches of the 2024-25 season, although he was unable to prevent the team’s relegation from the Championship.
In July, the former Arsenal and Juventus player stated he was "excited by the challenge" of being the first prominent British player to compete in the Mexican league.
Wales is set to travel to Astana on Thursday, September 4, currently positioned second in Group J. They will also face Canada in a friendly match in Swansea on September 9.
