Aberdeen Secures First Win of the Season with Dominant Performance Against Dundee
Aberdeen, inspired by Jesper Karlsson, ended their goal drought in the Scottish Premiership and achieved their first victory of the season with a commanding 4-0 win over Dundee at Pittodrie.
After failing to score in their first six matches, Jimmy Thelin's squad found their rhythm, netting three goals within just 11 minutes of the first half to establish an insurmountable lead.
The scoring began with a penalty after Cameron Congreve handled the ball while attempting to clear a corner. Karlsson confidently stepped up to convert, firing the ball past Jon McCracken for Aberdeen's inaugural league goal this season.
This breakthrough ignited a surge of confidence among the Aberdeen players, leading to a quick succession of goals. Kevin Nisbet set up Adil Aouchiche, who, despite being on his back, managed to direct a shot into the bottom corner through a crowded defense.
Shortly after, the third goal arrived. Stuart Armstrong sprinted down the left flank and found Emmanuel Gyamfi, who scored with his weaker foot into the bottom corner.
Although Jack Milne had a goal disallowed for offside, the best was yet to come.
Aberdeen showed signs of fatigue in the second half, but Karlsson stood out with a remarkable performance. He collected a ball in the box, skillfully maneuvered past several defenders, and struck a stunning shot into the top corner while facing away from goal.
Despite remaining at the bottom of the league, Jimmy Thelin was visibly pleased on the touchline, seeing glimpses of the team that had enjoyed an impressive unbeaten streak at the start of the previous season.
Analysis: Karlsson's Performance Sparks Attack
When Aberdeen announced Karlsson's loan signing late in the summer transfer window, it took many by surprise. The Swedish winger had previously cost Serie A side Bologna nearly £10 million just a few years ago.
At only 27, he was prolific with AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie as recently as 2022. Though his time at Aberdeen had not started strongly, he was undeniably the standout player in this match.
Displaying relentless energy, Karlsson took seven shots—more than any player in the Premiership this season—and attempted nine crosses, the most for Aberdeen, while completing six successful dribbles, maintaining a perfect record.
His performance proved to be a nightmare for the Dundee defense, which struggled to contain his skill.
Dundee found it challenging to recover after conceding the first goal. They had brief moments of play in the second half, but by then, the game was beyond reach, and any goal would have been merely a consolation.
Congreve was the most vibrant player for Dundee, but the returns of Simon Murray and Yan Dhanda were less impactful than needed, as both appeared out of sync. Dhanda, in particular, often found himself isolated and made poor decisions, reflecting the lack of confidence that had plagued Dundee at the start of the season.
What They Said
Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin: "I’m very pleased with the performance. The players have worked hard in training and in previous matches without getting the results or goals they deserved. We saw some positive signs against Shakhtar on Thursday, and the connection between the fans and the team is growing. The energy was back. Today, we started strongly, and the fans witnessed the players' efforts. That’s how we grow stronger."
Dundee head coach Steven Pressley: "It was a really disappointing afternoon. The effort was there; they worked hard out of possession. However, at times, the gaps in our formation were too large, and Aberdeen took full advantage. Ultimately, I’m responsible for that as the manager."
What's Next for Both Teams?
Aberdeen will travel to St Mirren when the league resumes on Saturday, October 18 (15:00 BST), while Dundee will host Celtic on Sunday afternoon (12:00 BST).
