Andreas Weimann Leads Derby County to Dramatic Victory Over West Bromwich Albion
Andreas Weimann's first goal for Derby County in over seven years propelled the Rams to a surprising victory over West Bromwich Albion, marking their first Championship win of the season.
The Austrian international scored just four minutes after being substituted into the match against his former team, in a game that offered few scoring opportunities.
Weimann's decisive goal in the 84th minute came from Derby's only shot on target, while West Brom's best chance to equalize came from Jayson Molumby, whose late effort struck the crossbar.
This unexpected triumph dampened the celebrations for West Brom, who were commemorating 125 years at The Hawthorns.
Derby's victory also extends their impressive recent record against West Brom, marking their second win over Ryan Mason's side this season, following a penalty shootout victory in the Carabao Cup in August. This win represents Derby's sixth consecutive victory across all competitions.
In a game that lacked excitement, the most significant events unfolded in the closing minutes. Derby goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom made a crucial save to deny Molumby after he had already faced challenges from Isaac Price and Nat Phillips.
Weimann then connected with a flicked header from fellow substitute Patrick Agyemang, who made his highly anticipated debut for the Rams. Weimann skillfully cut inside before finding the bottom corner to break the deadlock.
This goal marked Weimann's first since returning to Derby for a second stint this summer, after previously playing for Bristol City, West Brom, and Blackburn.
Molumby later struck the woodwork in a desperate attempt to equalize for West Brom, who slipped from second to fifth place in the league standings as a result of the loss. Meanwhile, Derby's first three points of the season lifted them to 19th place.
'A Perfect Away Performance' - Reactions
West Bromwich Albion manager Ryan Mason commented to BBC Radio WM:
"Anyone watching the game would agree that we didn’t deserve to lose, especially conceding our first shot on target in the 84th minute. It’s disappointing, but we accept it and must move on. Despite the result, we had a strong performance, particularly in the first half when we created several chances. Sometimes, the game doesn’t go your way. However, it was a positive display overall. Naturally, I’m feeling the sting of this loss, as are the players, because we felt we deserved more from this match."
Derby County head coach John Eustace shared his thoughts with BBC Radio Derby:
When asked if it was the perfect away performance, he replied, "I think so. We didn’t intend to sit as deep as we did in the first half, but we defended well in our box. At halftime, we discussed pushing the team forward another 10 or 15 yards, which we accomplished. We also needed to improve our ball retention, as we were too careless with possession in the first half. The second half was a much more satisfying performance, and what a fantastic way to win with five minutes remaining—one of our substitutes coming off the bench to score like that. It was wonderful to see Andreas on the pitch; he has a knack for finding the net in crucial moments, and he has demonstrated that consistently over the years."
