Arsenal Dominates Slavia Prague with Mikel Merino's Brace
Mikel Merino scored twice as Arsenal secured a comfortable victory over Slavia Prague in the league phase of the Champions League, extending their winning streak to eight matches across all competitions.
This match also marked Arsenal's eighth consecutive clean sheet, equaling a club record set in 1903 over two different seasons.
The Spanish midfielder started up front in place of the injured Viktor Gyokeres and, reminiscent of his performance last season when he filled in for Kai Havertz, showcased his versatility by becoming a pivotal player for his team.
Arsenal opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when a penalty was awarded following a handball by Lukas Provod, which was confirmed by the video assistant referee (VAR) after Gabriel flicked on a corner.
Captain Bukayo Saka stepped up to convert the penalty, drilling the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Although the Gunners struggled in the first half, navigating a challenging opening period where Provod missed a good opportunity for Slavia Prague, they came out strong in the second half.
Seconds after the restart, Merino doubled Arsenal's lead with a volley from Leandro Trossard's cross, finding the bottom corner of the net.
He scored his second goal in the 68th minute, rising to meet a cross from Declan Rice as home goalkeeper Jakub Markovic failed to collect the ball.
Another notable moment came when Max Dowman, at just 15 years and 308 days old, became the youngest player to appear in the Champions League, replacing Trossard and breaking the previous record held by Youssoufa Moukoko, who played at 16 years and 18 days for Borussia Dortmund in 2020.
Slavia Prague believed they had a penalty late in the match when Provod went down after a challenge from Ben White. However, the decision was overturned after the referee reviewed the incident on the monitor, with VAR intervening.
This victory solidified Arsenal's strong start to the Premier League season, as they maintained a perfect record with four wins from four matches in the Champions League, extending their unbeaten run to 13 matches in all competitions.
