Arsenal's Max Dowman Becomes Youngest Player in Champions League History
Arsenal teenager Max Dowman has made history by becoming the youngest player to participate in a Champions League match, following his substitute appearance in the team's 3-0 victory over Slavia Prague.
At just 15 years and 308 days old, Dowman surpassed the previous record held by Youssoufa Moukoko, who played for Borussia Dortmund at the age of 16 years and 18 days against Zenit.
Dowman entered the match in the 72nd minute, replacing Leandro Trossard, as Arsenal achieved their tenth consecutive win and secured their eighth consecutive clean sheet, equaling a club record set in 1903 during Tuesday's group stage encounter.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Dowman's performance, stating, "It doesn't get any harder than this competition, and Max, at 15, immediately looked to take on defenders and win free-kicks. His style of play attracts a lot of contact, and he has an exceptional ability to time his movements with the ball. We have a tremendous talent on our hands."
This milestone comes just six days after Dowman became the youngest Arsenal player to start a match in the EFL Cup, where the team triumphed over Brighton.
Dowman is already the second youngest player to represent Arsenal and the second youngest to play in the Premier League, with teammate Ethan Nwaneri holding both records at 15 years and 181 days.
Who is Arsenal's Teenage Prodigy?
Having been training with Arsenal's first-team squad since the age of 14, Dowman joined the first team during a warm-weather training camp in Dubai in January 2024. Supporters had been calling for him to receive playing time last season as Arteta faced a shortage of attacking options due to injuries to key players.
Dowman has a history of breaking records, having previously become the youngest scorer in the Under-17 European Championship while representing England in May. Additionally, he recently became the youngest goalscorer for England Under-19s.
Given his extraordinary potential, Dowman has become an integral part of Arteta's plans as Arsenal competes for success on multiple fronts this season. The club has implemented measures to ensure his career development and safeguarding, including considerations regarding his changing facilities, a strong emphasis on his education, and ensuring he receives adequate support from his teammates in an adult team environment.
Arteta has been cautious in managing Dowman's progress. Following his debut in a 5-0 victory against Leeds on August 23, the manager noted that the club has been monitoring how he responds to various situations, including being on the bench, training with the first team, or being omitted from the squad entirely.

Moukoko held the record for 26 years until Dowman's recent achievement. Before Moukoko, former Chelsea full-back Celestine Babayaro was the youngest player to compete in the tournament, debuting at 16 years and 86 days for Anderlecht against Steaua Bucharest in November 1994.
In addition, Lamine Yamal recently became the second youngest player in Champions League history when he started for Barcelona at 16 years and 68 days against Antwerp in September 2023.
