Aston Villa Triumphs Over Brighton in Thrilling Comeback
Ollie Watkins scored twice as Aston Villa staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Brighton in a thrilling seven-goal encounter.
This match featured two teams in excellent form, with Brighton having won three of their last four league games, while Villa was on a three-match winning streak.
The Seagulls appeared poised to extend their successful run when Jan Paul van Hecke scored from close range after goalkeeper Marco Bizot, who replaced Emi Martinez shortly before kick-off, failed to handle a corner effectively.
Brighton doubled their lead when substitute Jack Hinshelwood's attempted square pass deflected off Pau Torres into his own net, leaving Villa in a difficult position.
However, Watkins ignited a stunning fightback by scoring two goals before halftime to level the match. He netted his first by sliding in to finish Ian Maatsen's cross and then confidently equalized with a well-placed shot after racing onto a ball over the defense.
With momentum on their side, Villa took the lead in the second half when Amadou Onana scored from a corner at the far post.
Onana and Hinshelwood both had opportunities to score before substitute Donyell Malen added Villa's fourth goal with nearly his first touch, capitalizing on a rebound after Evann Guessand's header was parried back into the danger area by Bizot.
Van Hecke gave Brighton a glimmer of hope with a well-timed strike from the edge of the box, but Villa held firm to secure their sixth consecutive victory across all competitions.
Villa Analysis: Watkins Shines for Spirited Villa
It was perhaps unsurprising that this match turned out to be highly entertaining, given the current form of both teams. A win would have seen either side potentially rise to third in the table, adding extra incentive to secure all three points.
Since a challenging start to the season, where they failed to win any of their first six matches, Villa has been in sensational form, winning 12 and losing only two of their last 14 games.
Despite struggling to find the net earlier in the season, with just one goal before this match, Watkins' performance proved crucial as he scored twice to turn the tide in Villa's favor. Both goals showcased his natural striking instinct; the opener was a well-timed slide, and the second was a clinical finish after breaking free from Brighton's defense.
With another goal from Malen—his sixth in six games across all competitions—Villa's attacking prowess looks formidable, positioning them as strong contenders for a top-four finish this season.
