Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo Shines in Premier League
Bournemouth fans likely braced for a challenging season after witnessing £200 million worth of first-team talent depart during the summer transfer window. However, retaining one key player—Antoine Semenyo—has proven to be a brilliant decision, as the Ghanaian winger has been instrumental in the team's rise to second place in the Premier League.
The 25-year-old showcased his talent by scoring twice and providing an assist in Bournemouth's 3-1 comeback victory over Fulham on Friday, bringing the team within one point of league leaders Liverpool.
His first goal was a standout moment; he picked up the ball on the left wing, outmaneuvered defenders, advanced to the byline, and skillfully slotted the ball through goalkeeper Bernd Leno's legs from a tight angle.
Semenyo later assisted Justin Kluivert's goal before sealing the match with a late strike during a counter-attack, bringing his tally to six league goals this season, placing him just behind Manchester City’s prolific scorer, Erling Haaland.
Since May, Semenyo has directly contributed to more goals than any other player in the Premier League, with a total of 12 (eight goals and four assists).
This remarkable performance comes as a testament to his journey, having been signed by Bristol City from the South Gloucestershire and Stroud College academy at the age of 17.
“It was a tough night for football due to the weather, but that didn’t affect Semenyo,” remarked former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp on Sky Sports. “He glides across the pitch with incredible talent, making it look effortless regardless of which foot he uses.”
Despite many first-team players leaving Bournemouth, Semenyo was linked with moves to top clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Tottenham. Instead, he signed a five-year contract on July 1, a decision that has proved beneficial for the Cherries, as he has emerged as one of the league's standout players.
Last season marked a significant milestone for Semenyo, as he scored 11 goals in the league and 13 across all competitions. In the current season, he has netted six goals and provided three assists in his first seven Premier League matches.
When asked by the BBC if he was experiencing the best form of his career, Semenyo replied, “Yes, I’d like to think so. I thank God immensely for playing a significant role in my life, and I’m just reaping the rewards now.”
Many clubs may regret not taking a chance on him earlier. Semenyo qualifies for the Ghana national team through his father, although he hails from London. He faced rejections from Arsenal, Spurs, and Millwall as a youth before joining a West Country academy managed by former Leeds and Forest Green manager Dave Hockaday. Bristol City signed him in 2017, but he had to go through loan spells at Bath, Newport, and Sunderland before breaking into the first team in the 2020-21 season.
In January 2023, Semenyo made a £10 million transfer to Bournemouth and has continued to improve since then. “He is a player brimming with confidence,” said Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola. “His confidence has grown as he has worked his way up from lower divisions to the Premier League. He is fundamental to our success.”
Semenyo's statistics are impressive; he ranks first in the Premier League for duels won, first for possession regained in the final third, second for sprints, and is among the top five for dribbles, along with his goal contributions.
Teammate Kluivert praised Semenyo, stating, “He is incredible. He demonstrates his talent in every game. He is simply world-class.”
Bournemouth manager Iraola is quickly becoming a sought-after coach. The 43-year-old Basque has been at the helm since 2023, following the unexpected dismissal of Gary O'Neil. Initially, there was skepticism surrounding his appointment due to his relative obscurity and previous management experience with AEK Larnaca, Mirandes, and Rayo Vallecano.
However, Iraola's tenure has been remarkably successful, guiding the club to a 12th-place finish and then a ninth-place finish. The team has never been this high in the top flight more than two games into a season.
In addition to his effective management during a period of player departures, Iraola's tactical decisions during matches have been commendable. For six minutes against Fulham, he opted for three defenders instead of four, significantly impacting the game's outcome.
In the 78th minute, he substituted a defender for a winger while the team was trailing 1-0. By the 85th minute, Bournemouth had turned the game around to lead 2-1.
“We had to take risks and add more offensive players, and it paid off,” Iraola remarked. “The players made the difference today.”
Kluivert added, “What he has achieved, especially considering the players we lost, is incredible. The coach is the driver of our bus, and he’s taking us on an exciting journey.”
Redknapp commented, “Iraola has the potential to manage any team in world football. He improves players, and everything they do is exciting. Bournemouth should cherish him while they can, as his future may hold greater opportunities.”
As for Bournemouth's aspirations, many felt the club had overachieved by finishing ninth last season, with discussions of potential European competition on the horizon. However, three key defenders—Illia Zabarnyi, Milos Kerkez, and Dean Huijsen—departed for top European clubs, generating nearly £150 million in transfer fees.
The club also failed to secure a permanent deal for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who instead joined Arsenal. By the end of the transfer window, Bournemouth had recouped over £200 million, including the sale of forward Dango Ouattara to Brentford.
This season, the defense features a blend of new signings and established players. Left-back Adrien Truffert, acquired from Rennes, and center-back Marcos Senesi, who joined in 2022, have been consistent starters in every Premier League match. Center-back Bafode Diakite, signed from Lille, has participated in all but one game, and several other defenders have also seen action.
Goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, who transferred from Chelsea, has been a constant presence between the posts. Even prior to Friday's match, Bournemouth led the league in possession wins, duels participated in, and recoveries, showcasing their pressing style of play.
They also excelled in long passes and clearances. “We remain humble because the season is long,” Kluivert stated. “But who knows what we can achieve? We’re aiming for the highest finish possible.”
