Bristol City Triumphs Over Southampton with Twine's Double
Scott Twine scored two quick goals, leading Bristol City to a 3-1 victory over Southampton and propelling the team to fourth place in the Championship.
Southampton's Adam Armstrong opened the scoring with a deft chip over Bristol City goalkeeper Radek Vitek. However, just three minutes later, Anis Mehmeti equalized for the hosts.
Twine then made his mark in the second half, scoring twice within seven minutes. He reacted swiftly to tap in a rebound after Zak Vyner's deflected shot hit the post, before capitalizing on a careless pass from the Saints to sprint half the length of the pitch and slot the ball past goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
This defeat adds pressure on Southampton manager Will Still, as his team slips to 17th in the league standings, having won only two of their last eleven matches.
After a lackluster 0-0 draw against Swansea at home, many Southampton fans left Ashton Gate before the final whistle as their team suffered a fourth league loss this season, remaining closer to the relegation zone than playoff contention.
Southampton began the match with early possession, with Cameron Archer nearly scoring twice, but he missed the target on both occasions. Armstrong then found space on the right but failed to trouble Vitek, who comfortably saved his attempt.
However, Armstrong eventually found the net, receiving a well-placed pass from Shea Charles that allowed him to chip the ball over Vitek to put the Saints ahead.
Bristol City struggled to create chances initially, but Mehmeti equalized unexpectedly just three minutes later. A long pass from Rob Dickie found Mehmeti, who deftly slotted the ball into the far corner, marking his fifth goal of the season.
City pressed for a second goal, with Neto Borges and Mark Sykes both missing the target, but it was Southampton who nearly regained the lead. Armstrong set up Archer, who found himself one-on-one with Vitek, but the goalkeeper stood firm to keep the score level at halftime.
Both teams emerged from the break determined, with Leo Scienza hitting the crossbar and Archer missing another opportunity by heading over from close range. Bristol City, however, continued to pose a threat, and Mehmeti fired a powerful shot just wide before Twine put them ahead in the 56th minute.
Vyner's deflected shot hit the woodwork, confusing the Southampton defense, and Twine took advantage, scoring the rebound. His second goal came from his own initiative as he intercepted a weak pass from Caspar Jander and sprinted towards McCarthy, lifting the ball over the keeper to make it 3-1.
Southampton attempted to rally in the final 25 minutes, but the Bristol City defense held firm, securing their second home victory of the season.
