Burnley Advances in Carabao Cup with Late Winner
Oliver Sonne scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner, propelling Burnley into the third round of the Carabao Cup with a victory over Championship side Derby County.
As a penalty shoot-out appeared imminent, Sonne latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Mike Tresor, guiding a low left-footed finish into the net off the inside of the post.
The Clarets got off to an ideal start at Turf Moor, with Aaron Ramsey putting them ahead in the fourth minute, finishing expertly from an assist by Armando Broja.
Derby, who controlled much of the possession in the first half, equalized ten minutes before the break when former Liverpool midfielder Bobby Clark completed a well-executed move with a calm finish.
Burnley’s Zian Flemming tested Derby goalkeeper Josh Vickers with a header late in the first half, while Loum Tchaouna narrowly missed the target with a shot from a tight angle as the Clarets aimed to regain their lead.
The energetic Tchaouna struck the post with a low shot inside the area, but it was Sonne who ultimately broke Derby's resistance in the added time of the second half.
Scott Parker's team will learn their third-round opponents after the conclusion of Wednesday's match between Grimsby Town and Manchester United.
