Callum Robinson Eyes Opportunity Against Chelsea in EFL Cup
Callum Robinson has been a frequent spectator this season at Cardiff City, but on Tuesday, Chelsea will be hoping he remains on the bench.
The League One leaders are set to face the Club World Cup champions in an EFL Cup quarter-final at Cardiff City Stadium, and Robinson could prove to be a crucial asset for the home side.
The Republic of Ireland forward boasts an impressive track record against Chelsea, having scored five goals in just three Premier League matches against the former Champions League winners.
Notably, Robinson netted two of those goals during a substitute appearance for West Bromwich Albion in a 5-2 victory at Stamford Bridge in 2021, just a month before Chelsea secured their second Champions League title.
Although Cardiff currently sits two divisions below the London club, Robinson playfully reminded Chelsea fans of his past exploits against their team when the draw was announced.
"Not many players score that many goals against a team like Chelsea over the years, so it's certainly stuck with me throughout my career," he remarked.
"When we drew them in the quarter-finals, I knew I had to share a bit of banter on social media, but I didn’t realize I was still on their minds to that extent."
Despite his Premier League experience and international credentials, Robinson has had to wait for his opportunities at Cardiff this season. Out of his 18 league appearances, only four have been starts, yet he has managed to contribute four league goals and six in all competitions.
"Right now, every minute I get on the pitch is an opportunity for me to push for more playing time, just like any professional would," Robinson stated. "I need to keep my head down, train hard as I have all season, and aim to influence games. Hopefully, Brian [Barry-Murphy, Cardiff head coach] will give me more minutes and chances."
If Robinson is given the starting nod against Chelsea, it will be a prime opportunity to further his case for more regular appearances at Cardiff and to enhance his already impressive record against the Londoners.
"Hopefully, it will be the same tomorrow. The circumstances are different, of course; we’re in League One, but we’re performing well as a group. It’s a significant test to see what we can achieve against a team we all aspire to be like. Magic can happen in cup competitions, and we’re entering this match in great form. We have nothing to lose, and we’ll give it our best shot in our own style," he added.
