Chelsea's Enzo Maresca Expresses Support for Players Amidst Speculation
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his happiness at the club, stating he is "falling more in love with the players," just days after describing his experience as "the worst 48 hours" of his tenure.
Following a victory over Everton that placed the Blues fourth in the Premier League, Chelsea progressed to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 3-1 win against League One side Cardiff City on Tuesday.
However, Maresca's earlier comments regarding the two days leading up to the Everton match—where he remarked it was "the worst since I joined the club because people didn’t support me and the team"—have cast a shadow over these achievements.
It remains unclear who or what prompted these remarks, as Maresca refrained from elaborating during his press conference on Monday. Nevertheless, after the match against Cardiff, where he relied on goals from substitutes Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho to secure the win, Maresca indicated that he does feel supported.
"I have said many times in various press conferences that the support has always been there. Any supporters in the world are unhappy when their team doesn’t win," he stated. "So, in moments of defeat, it is natural for them to express their dissatisfaction. Overall, the fans have always been there for us. I find myself falling even more in love with the players during these tricky games."
'I want the best for everyone'
Maresca, who led Chelsea to victory in the Club World Cup and Europa Conference League earlier this year, has now guided the team to three semi-finals in just 18 months.
Yet speculation surrounding his comments continues, particularly due to his lack of clarification. His team selection and rotation policy have faced criticism this season, and it is believed he sought more support from the club during a recent four-game winless streak.
Additionally, he has highlighted injury and suspension challenges, with star forward Cole Palmer sidelined for much of the season and key midfielder Moises Caicedo serving a three-match suspension while managing a knee issue.
Having secured a Champions League spot in his first season and led Chelsea to two trophies, Maresca may feel he deserves more backing. Reaching the League Cup semi-finals positions Chelsea as contenders for another trophy.
When asked about the club's support, Maresca told Sky Sports: "Tonight, the focus must be on our progression to the semi-finals. The support from fans has always been there. We are moving in the right direction, and everything I do is to ensure the best for everyone—fans, players, and everyone involved."
