Chelsea Seeks Internal Solution for Central Defender Amid Colwill Injury
Enzo Maresca has informed Chelsea of his desire to sign a new central defender to replace the injured Levi Colwill, although the club is currently exploring an "internal solution."
England international Colwill underwent surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and is anticipated to miss a significant portion of the season.
The 22-year-old was a key player for Chelsea last season, starting 35 of their 38 Premier League matches as they qualified for the Champions League.
When asked about potential solutions for replacing Colwill, Maresca stated, "The club knows exactly what I think. I believe we need a central defender. While we are looking for an internal solution, the club is fully aware of my stance."
In addition to his contributions in the Premier League, Colwill played a pivotal role as a substitute in the Conference League final and during the Club World Cup, helping Chelsea secure their first two major trophies under the current ownership.
Maresca emphasized Colwill's tactical importance, particularly his ability to facilitate build-up play from the back. "When we build, we build with Levi in the middle," he explained. "Last year, we played 64 matches, and in all of them, either Levi or Tosin [Adarabioyo] was in that central position. With Levi now sidelined, Tosin is the only other player who can perform that role effectively. However, we face challenges in the Premier League and Champions League with our current squad."
Maresca noted that while players like Jorrel Hato are central defenders, their experience in that role is limited. "Yes, he is a central defender, but can he execute the specific tasks required? It's different," he added. He also mentioned injury concerns affecting other defenders, including Wes Fofana and Benoit Badiashile. "This is why I have communicated my views on the need for central defenders to the club."
During a recent two-week pre-season, Josh Acheampong and Trevoh Chalobah were trialed in Colwill's position during wins over Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan.
Chelsea is reportedly interested in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who is also a target for Liverpool. However, the club's immediate focus appears to be on strengthening their attacking options in the final weeks of the transfer window, with ongoing discussions involving Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons.
