Craig Bellamy Committed to Wales Amid Celtic Links
Craig Bellamy acknowledges the speculation linking him to the vacant managerial position at his former club Celtic but emphasizes his commitment to the Wales national team.
Brendan Rodgers stepped down as Celtic's manager last month, leading to speculation about potential replacements, including Bellamy, who is under contract with Wales until 2028.
Despite the rumors, Bellamy remains focused on the upcoming World Cup qualifiers as Wales aims to secure a spot in next summer's finals.
"It’s not on my radar—and it won’t be on my radar," Bellamy stated regarding the Celtic job.
Wales is set to face Liechtenstein and North Macedonia in their final World Cup qualifying matches in November, with two victories ensuring a runners-up position in Group J.
As a player, Bellamy, who took over as Wales manager in July 2024, had a brief loan stint at Celtic during the latter half of the 2004-05 season from Newcastle United.
"I can understand the links because I played there, and now I’m coaching, so I definitely understand the connections," the 46-year-old added. "But right now, I love what I’m doing. I have to be honest; I’m completely focused on what’s ahead.
"It looks like it’s going to be a play-off in March, and that’s all I’m focused on. I know it sounds a bit cliché, but it’s the honest truth. I couldn’t ask for anything more than what I have at this moment, and that’s where my focus lies."
The former Liverpool and Manchester City player has made a strong impression in his first senior managerial role, successfully leading Wales to promotion to the top tier of the Nations League while implementing a more adventurous style of play.
However, Bellamy is currently facing a challenging period, with Wales having lost three of their last four matches across all competitions.
"I have several years left on my contract... I signed a four-year deal," Bellamy noted. "I understand the dynamics of the game. Some might feel they’ve had enough of me in a short time, which is a reality as well. But as long as I’m wanted and people in Wales believe I can contribute, that motivates me to stay.
"I try to live day by day. It’s not always the wisest approach, but it makes sense to me, and I try to appreciate what I have. This period has been one of the best in my life, and I hope it continues for a long time to come."
