Eintracht Frankfurt Triumphs Over Galatasaray in Champions League Opener
Eintracht Frankfurt rallied from an early setback to secure a convincing victory against Galatasaray in their opening match of the Champions League season.
The match, held at Deutsche Bank Park, featured an electric atmosphere. Galatasaray took the lead in the eighth minute when former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane intercepted the ball in his own half, charged towards the Frankfurt defense, and assisted Yunus Akgun, who found the bottom corner with a precise shot.
However, the tide turned dramatically in the final minutes of the first half, with three goals scored in just 12 minutes.
Ex-Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez inadvertently leveled the score at 1-1, as a blocked shot by goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir deflected off him and into the net.
Shortly before halftime, 19-year-old Turkish international Can Uzan put the hosts ahead with a well-placed shot on the turn.
In the fifth minute of injury time, Galatasaray conceded another own goal when Wilfried Singo inadvertently headed the ball into his own net while attempting to defend a free-kick.
Frankfurt extended their lead to 4-1 midway through the second half, courtesy of a header from Jonathan Burkardt. Ansgar Knauff then added a fifth goal after Elye Wahi dispossessed defender Gabriel Sala.
This victory positions Eintracht Frankfurt at the top of the 36-team league phase after the first of eight match weeks.
Galatasaray, which featured former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, faced their first defeat since March 29, ending a remarkable run of 13 consecutive competitive victories.
The Turkish side's next Champions League fixture is against Premier League leaders Liverpool, who will visit Istanbul on September 30. Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt will face Atletico Madrid on the same night.
