Erling Haaland's YouTube Channel Sparks Raw Milk Debate

The first video on Erling Haaland's new YouTube channel has garnered over five million views, igniting discussions regarding his consumption of raw milk.

In an episode titled 'A Day in the Life of a Pro Footballer', the Manchester City striker and Norwegian international, Haaland, 25, shares insights into his daily routine, including his passion for cooking and enjoying tomahawk steaks.

However, he also addresses his preference for drinking raw, unpasteurized milk, which is not available in shops but can be legally sold in England.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) warns that raw milk "may contain harmful bacteria that can cause food poisoning," advising that it should be avoided by individuals with weakened immune systems, including seniors, pregnant women, young children, and those with compromised health.

This raises the question: why does Haaland choose to drink it, and what are the implications for those considering following his example?

Understanding Raw Milk and Haaland's Consumption

In the YouTube episode, Haaland is shown visiting a farm in Cheshire to collect his supply of raw milk. He describes it as a "superfood" that he believes benefits his stomach, skin, bones, and muscles, stating, "That is why I drink it." Sources close to the athlete have informed BBC Sport that he consumes one glass each morning and another after training—a practice he has maintained for as long as he can remember.

Essentially, Haaland believes that this choice enhances his health, a crucial mindset for an athlete at the top of his game. For him, it's more of a lifestyle choice than a strictly nutritional one.

It is reported that some of Haaland’s teammates at Manchester City also consumed raw milk prior to his arrival, although the extent of their consumption remains unclear.

Most milk consumed in the UK is heat-treated or pasteurized to eliminate harmful bacteria, while raw milk is bottled directly from the animal without any treatment.

According to FSA deputy director of policy Natasha Smith, "Raw milk may contain food poisoning bacteria, so there are extra checks and hygiene standards for raw drinking milk producers. While these stricter controls aim to ensure safety and support consumer choice, it's important to remember that vulnerable populations should avoid it."

Availability of Raw Milk

The sale of raw cow's drinking milk is legal in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, but it can only be sold directly to consumers by registered raw drinking milk production farms, at certified farmers' markets, and by distributors using milk-round vehicles. In Scotland, it is prohibited.

Raw milk must come from healthy animals, free from diseases like tuberculosis, and produced on farms that adhere to strict hygiene standards, with inspections conducted twice a year. It must also carry appropriate health warnings on its labeling.

FSA representatives indicate that they continuously review regulations surrounding raw drinking milk to support consumer choice while prioritizing public health.

Expert Opinions on Raw Milk

Despite being classified as a "risky" product, the FSA noted to BBC Sport that the popularity of raw milk is on the rise because many believe it offers health benefits, although credible scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited.

The farm where Haaland was filmed purchasing his milk reported on Facebook that their product has seen increased demand since the episode aired, with staff feeling overwhelmed and plans to acquire a new dairy cow to expedite orders.

Former nutritionist for Manchester City's academy, Dan Richardson, emphasized the importance of prioritizing food safety, stating, "The challenge with raw milk is that while some companies effectively minimize bacterial risks, there remains a potential for contamination. I am confident that Haaland sources premium quality raw milk. However, when individuals attempt to replicate these dietary habits, it can become unsafe, as they may opt for cheaper, less safe options that could pose health risks."

When asked about the potential for the raw milk trend to grow, Richardson expressed concern, saying, "I can unfortunately see it happening."

For Haaland, raw milk is part of a unique off-field routine that includes practices such as red-light therapy and adding maple syrup to his coffee. Richardson cautioned young athletes to focus on balanced nutrition, advocating for adequate carbohydrate and protein intake, and regular meals with snacks, rather than chasing trends. "Safe food choices should always be a priority," he concluded.
