Ethan Nwaneri's Season Challenges Amid Arsenal's Success
Ethan Nwaneri had a standout season last year, stepping in effectively for the injured Bukayo Saka at Arsenal.
Primarily positioned on the right wing, he scored nine goals in 37 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as one of England's most promising young talents.
Now 18 years old, Nwaneri made history as the second-youngest goalscorer in Champions League history when he scored against Girona last January at 17 years and 314 days, surpassing only Jude Bellingham in age.
Additionally, he holds the record as the youngest player to appear in the Premier League, making his debut against Brentford at just 15 years and 181 days in September 2022.
Despite his impressive performances in the 2024-25 season, Nwaneri's playing time has been limited.
He has made 11 appearances this season, starting only three times in the Carabao Cup and Champions League, accumulating just 446 minutes on the pitch and scoring one goal.

His performances earned him an England debut under Thomas Tuchel, where he scored against Albania in a 2-0 win.
However, like Nwaneri, Lewis-Skelly has seen his role diminish this season, starting only one Premier League match.
This is largely due to the excellent form of Riccardo Calafiori at left-back and the arrival of Piero Hincapie on loan, who has the potential to be signed permanently for around £45 million.
Both players signed new five-year contracts in the summer, committing their futures to Arsenal after their breakthrough seasons.
Nwaneri's future was the subject of considerable speculation prior to his contract extension, with interest from Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea reported. However, he ultimately chose to remain in north London until 2030.
Sources indicate that Nwaneri is fully dedicated to succeeding at Arsenal, and any potential transfer discussions would have occurred during his contract negotiations last summer.
As the January transfer window approaches, speculation about a loan move for Nwaneri has surfaced. However, both the club and player are not considering this option, believing that remaining with the squad during a title challenge and training alongside players like Saka, Eze, and Martin Odegaard will be more beneficial than seeking game time elsewhere.
Nwaneri's experience of regular minutes last season has raised his expectations, yet he understands the competitive nature of earning playing time at a club like Arsenal.
Discussions about his pathway into the first team took place during the summer contract negotiations. Nwaneri's versatility in playing both centrally and on the right side enhances his chances for more playing time, although the success of £48.5 million Madueke and £67 million Eze has intensified competition for those positions.
Arsenal has nine matches scheduled this month, including fixtures in the Premier League, FA Cup against Portsmouth, and the Champions League, providing ample opportunities for Nwaneri to showcase his talent.
He is aware that he must seize these opportunities to increase his involvement in the latter half of the season and continue developing his undeniable skills.
