Exeter City Works to Ensure Game Against Burton Albion After Fire
Exeter City is racing against the clock to ensure that Saturday's League One match against Burton Albion proceeds as planned, following a fire that caused significant damage at their home ground.
The control room and medical room at St James Park sustained severe damage in the fire last week, which destroyed essential cabling required for the safe operation of the game. Replacement work for the cabling is scheduled for Tuesday.
Before the match can take place, the local council's Safety Advisory Group must approve the stadium's safety measures.
"If we can't provide coverage from the control room, which manages the stewards, CCTV cameras, and other critical operations, the decision will be made that the ground is unsafe for use," said Clive Harrison, Exeter City's general manager, in an interview with BBC Radio Devon.
"The fire primarily melted the cabling; the equipment itself is intact. However, the cabling that runs throughout the stadium is the main concern. You can't simply substitute it with another type because of the specific fire alarms and CCTV systems that are integrated throughout the venue. It is crucial that the control room is fully operational again soon."
The timing of the fire poses additional financial challenges for Exeter City, which is a supporter-owned club that has already had to reduce its playing budget this season after overspending in the previous campaign.
The club has successfully raised approximately £40,000 through crowdfunding efforts toward the £100,000 needed for immediate repairs, while awaiting an assessment from their insurers.
