Falkirk Climbs into Top Six with Victory Over Aberdeen
Falkirk surged back into the top six of the Scottish Premiership with a narrow victory over Aberdeen, leaving the visitors without a win in their last five matches.
Under the management of John McGlynn, Falkirk moved ahead of their opponents thanks to a second-half header from Filip Lissah, following a dominant first half where they created numerous scoring opportunities.
Aberdeen's manager, Jimmy Thelin, altered the team's formation to a back four for the first time since September, but the change resulted in a vulnerable defense that struggled to contain Falkirk's attacks.
Despite having scored only once in their previous six matches, Falkirk took time to find the back of the net. They registered 11 shots in the first half before Lissah's decisive header in the 57th minute, which came from a corner and caught the Aberdeen defenders off guard.
This victory marks Falkirk's second win over Aberdeen this season, propelling them into sixth place and closer to the 40-point target set by McGlynn. Conversely, Aberdeen slipped to eighth place, suffering their fourth defeat in five games.
Analysis: Thelin Under Pressure as Falkirk Secures Hard-Fought Win
The atmosphere at full-time was tense, with a number of frustrated Aberdeen fans expressing their dissatisfaction with both the players and the manager. This is not the first instance of such outbursts this season.
Thelin's switch to a back four was intended to enhance their attacking options, but it only exposed a fragile defense, allowing Falkirk to dominate possession. By the 24th minute, Falkirk had already recorded four shots on target, surpassing their average for the season.
Liam Henderson missed a header, Calvin Miller had a free-kick saved, and Ethan Williams shot too close to the busy Dimitar Mitov. Against any other team, a goal would have seemed imminent; however, Aberdeen relied on Falkirk’s recent struggles in front of goal.
Eventually, the goal came, while Aberdeen struggled to create any significant chances, failing to register a single shot on target throughout the match. Their attempts to play out from the back were hampered by a nonexistent midfield. The central duo of Adil Aouchiche and Stuart Armstrong was disrupted by an injury, and even after the introduction of Sivert Heltne Nilsen, little improved.
Kenan Bilalovic made his first start but managed only five passes and 15 touches in 45 minutes. Meanwhile, Jesper Karlsson appeared increasingly frustrated with the performance of his teammates.
At times, it is difficult to discern a clear style or substance in this Aberdeen side, and they seem to be at a crossroads. After a brief resurgence in form between October and early November, they have now reverted to struggling, with Thelin under significant scrutiny.
