Graham Potter Appointed Head Coach of Sweden
Former West Ham manager Graham Potter has been appointed as the new head coach of Sweden.
The 50-year-old has taken on the role on a short-term basis to assist Sweden in their challenging World Cup qualification campaign.
Potter expressed his enthusiasm for the position, stating, "I am very humbled by the assignment, but also incredibly inspired. Sweden has fantastic players who perform in some of the world's best leagues each week. My job will be to create the conditions necessary for our team to perform at the highest level and secure Sweden's place in the World Cup next summer."
Sweden has been in search of a new head coach since the dismissal of Jon Dahl Tomasson following a 1-0 defeat to Kosovo on October 13, a result that rendered automatic qualification from their group unattainable.
Despite this setback, Sweden still has a chance to reach the play-offs without finishing in the top two of Group B, thanks to their successful campaign in the 2024-25 Nations League, where they topped their group.
Potter was relieved of his duties at West Ham at the end of September after a disappointing start to the season, which saw the team suffer five losses in six matches, leaving them in the bottom three of the Premier League. During his tenure at the east London club, he managed to secure only six wins out of 23 matches since joining in January.
However, Potter maintains a positive reputation in Sweden, having achieved three promotions in four seasons with Ostersund, elevating the club from the fourth division to the top flight, and winning a domestic cup in 2017. He also had successful tenures at Brighton and Swansea City before his brief stint at Chelsea in 2022, where he was dismissed after just seven months.
