Injury Update: Alexander Isak Faces Extended Absence
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has announced that Alexander Isak is expected to be sidelined for "a couple of months" due to injury, following what he described as a "reckless" challenge by Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven.
Isak suffered a fracture to his left leg as he was tackled by Van de Ven while scoring for Liverpool in their 2-1 victory against Spurs. He underwent surgery for what the club characterized as an "ankle injury that included a fibula fracture."
Slot expressed his disappointment, stating, "It's going to be a long injury, for a couple of months. It's a big disappointment for him and, as a result, for us."
Regarding the challenge from Van de Ven, Slot remarked, "This was, for me, a reckless challenge. If you make that tackle ten times, I think ten times there is a serious chance that a player gets a serious injury."
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher commented on the incident, saying that the tackle was one he would likely have made himself. "There’s a lot that has been made about many challenges in the game from Tottenham players, and many of them weren’t clever," Carragher noted during Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.
He continued, "I put myself in Van de Ven's position, and that’s a challenge I’d probably make. He’s trying to block it; it’s just the follow-through. I don’t know where else anyone thinks his foot is going to go. He has to make that challenge. You can’t let the striker just get a shot away in that situation. It’s just really bad luck for Isak. It’s probably one of the first glimpses we’ve seen of his real quality in a Liverpool shirt."
Carragher concluded, "It’s a huge blow because I think Liverpool were actually one attacker short anyway."
Natural Collision or Serious Foul Play?
Opinions regarding the incident may be influenced by Isak's injury; however, it is essential to recognize that it may simply be an unfortunate outcome rather than a result of foul play.
Analyzing Van de Ven's challenge and the circumstances surrounding Isak's injury is crucial. As Isak released his shot, Van de Ven slid in to attempt a block. Notably, it was Isak's shooting foot that sustained the injury after he planted it. His foot landed between Van de Ven's legs, leading to the injury.
If Van de Ven had tackled Isak directly or collided with his standing foot, the discussion would likely be different. However, Van de Ven aimed to block the ball in front of Isak, making it a legitimate challenge that should not warrant a red card.
This does not imply that a defender cannot be penalized for a reckless challenge while attempting to stop a shot. A notable example is the double leg fracture sustained by Manchester United's Luke Shaw in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven in 2015, where a similar blocking tackle resulted in severe injury without penalty due to the absence of VAR at the time.
In contrast, Van de Ven's challenge appears to be an accidental collision, characteristic of a standard defensive maneuver.
