Ipswich quickly regained the lead as Chuba Akpom, stepping up in the absence of the injured George Hirst, capped off a well-executed passing move to net his second goal of the season.
This victory allowed Ipswich to surpass Middlesbrough, who suffered a loss to Derby County. Meanwhile, Oxford's eighth away defeat of the season has left them languishing in 23rd place, with Craig Short continuing as interim manager following the dismissal of Gary Rowett before Christmas.
