Jack Hinshelwood's Late Goal Leads Brighton to Victory Over Brentford
Jack Hinshelwood made a triumphant return from injury, scoring the decisive goal as Brighton overcame Brentford 2-1 at a rainy Amex Stadium, propelling them to fifth place in the Premier League.
After missing the previous seven matches due to an ankle ligament injury, Hinshelwood came off the bench to net the winner in the 84th minute.
Brentford initially took the lead in the first half through Igor Thiago's penalty, which marked his ninth goal of the Premier League season and his seventh in as many matches.
Brighton had been dominating the game but found themselves behind in the 29th minute when Carlos Baleba conceded a penalty. Thiago converted calmly, taking advantage of a mistimed challenge after a clever backheel assist from Dango Ouattara.
Georginio Rutter stood out for Brighton in the first half, and he felt he deserved a penalty when he was caught by Yehor Yarmoliuk shortly after the break. However, the video assistant referee (VAR) did not intervene. Minutes later, Welbeck squandered a golden opportunity by shooting over from close range.
Brighton intensified their efforts, with Yankuba Minteh forcing a smart save from Brentford's goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. Welbeck eventually leveled the score, marking his seventh goal in seven league matches.
In a tense finish, Brentford was awarded a chance to equalize deep into stoppage time when Kevin Schade was fouled in the box. However, Thiago's second penalty attempt was saved by Brighton's Bart Verbruggen.
Brighton Analysis: Key Moments Extend Unbeaten Run
Fabian Hurzeler, who watched from the stands after receiving his third booking of the season, made history as the youngest manager to reach 50 Premier League games at 32 years and 269 days. However, his team’s first-half performance did not reflect this achievement, with only a couple of routine saves for Kelleher.
Baleba, who attracted significant transfer interest following an impressive 2024-25 season, struggled this year, epitomized by the penalty he conceded that led to his substitution at halftime.
Brighton’s performance improved in the second half, particularly after a moment of brilliance from Minteh set up Welbeck for the equalizer. A section of the home crowd expressed their displeasure when Diego Gomez was replaced by Hinshelwood, but the manager's decision was vindicated when the 20-year-old struck the winner from the edge of the area.
Fellow substitute Maxim de Cuyper nearly jeopardized the victory by conceding a penalty, but Verbruggen emerged as the hero, saving Thiago's poorly executed attempt.
Despite a mixed season thus far, Brighton's resilience extended their unbeaten home Premier League streak to 10 matches.
