Jaden Philogene's Early Goal Secures Ipswich Town Victory Over Stoke City
Jaden Philogene scored his seventh goal of the season, leading Ipswich Town to a victory over Stoke City and solidifying their position in the Championship's top six.
The 23-year-old, previously on loan at Stoke, netted a stunning opener just 100 seconds into the match, propelling the Tractor Boys to fourth place in the league table.
Ipswich had additional opportunities to extend their lead, with Ivan Azon missing two significant chances to increase the scoreline.
While Stoke enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the match, they struggled to create clear scoring opportunities.
It took Ipswich less than two minutes to build on their recent victory, a 3-0 win against league leaders Coventry. Philogene cut in from the left and executed a one-two with Marcelino Nunez before curling a magnificent shot past the stranded Viktor Johansson.
Stoke attempted to respond quickly, with a corner that was nodded across the goal, but Steven Nzonzi and Lamine Cisse got in each other's way, failing to convert from close range.
Azon should have doubled Ipswich's lead in the 19th minute when Stoke's goalkeeper Johansson rushed out of his area, only to partially clear a loose ball to Leif Davis. Davis's long-range effort was well saved by Johansson, but the ball fell to Azon, who blasted his 18-yard shot over the bar.
Azon came close again before halftime after some good work at the edge of the Stoke box, but his shot went wide of the post.
Though Ipswich had the better chances in front of goal, Stoke dominated possession and displayed neat football, albeit without any tangible results.
Azon had another opportunity before the hour mark, rising unmarked to meet a corner, but his header was comfortably saved by Johansson.
In the 83rd minute, Ipswich could have added a second goal when they caught Stoke on the break. Jack Clarke passed the ball to Nunez on the left side of the box, and Nunez curled a shot toward the top right corner, but Johansson made a brilliant save.
