Kairat Almaty Faces Daunting Challenge Against Real Madrid in Champions League
Kairat Almaty is set to face the most demanding travel schedule in this year's Champions League, as the debutants prepare to host Real Madrid in their first-ever home fixture on Tuesday.
The team traveled across three time zones and covered a staggering 6,900 kilometers for their opening match, suffering a 4-1 defeat against Sporting in Lisbon, Portugal, two weeks ago.
Now, the challenge intensifies as they take on the 15-time European champions, Real Madrid. However, the unique circumstances of their location may create a more level playing field.
Xabi Alonso's team will embark on a 6,441-kilometer journey to play at the 24,000-seat Ortalyq Stadion, situated in central Asia.
"Flying to Kazakhstan is not easy," said defender Damir Kassabulat in an interview with BBC Sport. "Home games in Almaty will be a significant advantage, and with our fans, it will feel like a fortress."
Interestingly, Almaty, which was Kazakhstan's southern capital, is closer to Beijing than Madrid. Meanwhile, the Spanish giants face a 13-hour flight to reach Almaty, which is five hours longer than a trip to New York.
Since joining UEFA in 2002, Kazakhstan has been part of European football.
"It's historic that a Kazakh club has qualified for the Champions League for the first time in a decade," remarked club president Kairat Boranbayev to BBC Sport. "This achievement is crucial financially, and the entire country stands behind us. We congratulate Europe for expanding its borders to allow Kairat to compete in these matches, and we believe we will make a significant impact in Europe."
Despite their underdog status, with a squad valued at just £10.9 million compared to Real Madrid's £1.2 billion, Kairat is determined to make their mark.
The geographical challenges are immense, as Kairat will need to cover approximately 25,000 kilometers for their four away matches—far more than any other team in the 36-team league phase.
Manager Rafael Urazbakhtin expressed optimism, stating, "When we qualified for the Champions League, we knew there would be travel involved, but we see it as a reward rather than a burden. This is the toughest test for our football, but also a dream come true and a historic moment for Kazakh football."
Overview of Kairat Almaty
Kairat Almaty has been home to several notable players, including former Arsenal winger Andrey Arshavin, Bayern Munich midfielder Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, and Brazilian striker Vagner Love. The club is affectionately known as The Nation's Team in Kazakhstan, having been the country's sole representative in the Soviet Top League from 1960 to 1991.
In recent years, Kairat has claimed four league titles and eight domestic cups, competing fiercely against rivals Astana, the only other Kazakh team to have participated in the Champions League group stage a decade ago.
With two Asian Cup Winners' Cup titles to their name, Kairat's most significant European achievement prior to this was reaching the Conference League group stage. Their recent success in qualifying for the Champions League was marked by a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Celtic, a feat that was celebrated nationwide.
President Boranbayev stated, "This demonstrates that Kazakh clubs can achieve success through long-term planning and investment in young players." The significance of this achievement was underscored when a couple went viral for interrupting their wedding to watch goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov save two penalties during the critical match.
Kairat is also unique as Kazakhstan's only private club, boasting a robust academy system. Their current 25-man squad features 12 international players and 13 locals.
Rising Star: Dastan Satpaev
Seventeen-year-old striker Dastan Satpaev, who has already earned five caps for Kazakhstan, is attracting significant attention as he prepares for a £4 million move to Chelsea next summer. Scouts discovered Satpaev during his time with Kairat's Under-17 team, where he excelled at the Helvetia Cup in Switzerland against teams such as Paris St-Germain and Marseille.
Negotiations began soon after, culminating in an agreement finalized in February 2025, potentially making him the first Kazakh player to compete in the Premier League. Satpaev has also undergone a two-week trial at Chelsea's Cobham training center, where he impressed by scoring a hat-trick in a behind-closed-doors match.
While other clubs, including Zenit St Petersburg, Real Sociedad, and Benfica, have shown interest, Kairat and Chelsea have established a supportive arrangement to aid Satpaev during his final season with the club. He has already netted 12 goals and provided seven assists in 26 domestic matches this season.
Known for his speed, Satpaev has drawn comparisons to Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero and made history as the second-youngest goalscorer in Champions League qualifying by scoring against Olimpija Ljubljana at just 16 years and 10 months old.
In his first interview with BBC Sport, Satpaev reflected on his journey, emphasizing his love for football from a young age and the support he received from Kairat. He aims to showcase the talent present in Kazakhstan and to continue improving as a professional player.
"With God's help, my ambition is to become a competitive player at the European level, demonstrating that Kazakhstan has many talented individuals and to keep striving for more achievements," he said.
