Linfield Advances to Third Round with Victory over Zalgiris
Linfield secured their place in the third round of the UEFA Conference League qualifying with a decisive 2-0 victory over Zalgiris.
Following a scoreless first leg in Lithuania, Matthew Fitzpatrick broke the deadlock at Windsor Park in the sixth minute. Chris Shields had an opportunity to extend the lead but saw his penalty saved.
Kieran Offord added a second goal in the 33rd minute, ensuring a comfortable win for the Blues.
The match began perfectly for the hosts as Offord capitalized on a loose ball in the penalty area and set up Fitzpatrick, who scored from close range, much to the delight of the home fans.
Linfield missed a chance to widen their lead when Offord was fouled in the box on 21 minutes. Shields took the penalty but was denied by Carlos Olses, and Ethan McGee's follow-up shot went over the bar.
Offord's brilliance shone through again in the 34th minute as he received a pass from Shields, launching a stunning 25-yard strike into the bottom corner, leaving Olses helpless.
The second half was less eventful, with limited opportunities. Fitzpatrick's shot was blocked by Mohamed Youla early on, while Zalgiris's Liviu Antal sent a long-range effort wide.
Substitute Chris McKee nearly made an immediate impact in the 73rd minute, but Olses managed to save his header from Kyle McClean's cross.
Olses continued to frustrate Linfield late in the game with a fine save from Fitzpatrick's header, following a dangerous delivery from Millar.
