Middlesbrough Dominates Hull City in Convincing Victory
Middlesbrough, in pursuit of promotion, delivered a decisive defeat to Hull City, scoring four goals in the first half.
The match kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes due to heavy rain and strong winds affecting traffic, but the visitors quickly overcame their late arrival with a powerful start.
David Strelec opened the scoring with a composed finish, followed by Alex Gilbert, who doubled the lead with a precise 20-yard shot. Morgan Whittaker then struck from just inside the area, and Riley McGree added a fourth goal from close range just before halftime, bringing the score to 4-0.
Despite being shell-shocked, Hull City managed to respond in the 62nd minute when Joe Gelhardt converted a penalty after being fouled in the area. However, a comeback was never on the cards.
This victory propelled Middlesbrough five points ahead of third-placed Millwall, although they remain seven points behind leaders Coventry City. Hull, who have the second highest goals scored in the league but also the second highest goals conceded, sit just outside the playoff spots in ninth place.
The comfortable win marks the second consecutive victory for Boro under their new Swedish manager, Kim Hellberg, who saw his team completely dominate the first half, effectively ending the contest before the break.
Strelec capitalized on a McGree cross that was initially touched by Whittaker to score the opener. Hull struggled to register any shots during a dismal first half, and Gilbert, making his first appearance of the season, scored with a low strike past Ivor Pandur after a defensive lapse.
Gilbert then assisted Whittaker, who cut inside from the right to fire in the third goal, although Hull may consider themselves unfortunate, as Whittaker appeared to foul Regan Slater in the process. The fourth goal came as Boro easily navigated through Hull's defense, with McGree scoring on his second attempt.
In the second half, Middlesbrough understandably eased off, allowing Gelhardt to pull one back from the penalty spot after minimal contact from goalkeeper Sol Brynn. Middlesbrough will aim to build on this performance when they face struggling Charlton on Tuesday, December 9, while Hull, who could have moved into third place with a win, will look to recover when they host Wrexham on Wednesday, December 10.
'It was like it was Christmas today' - Hull City Reaction
Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic commented to BBC Radio Humberside: "It’s very simple; we gave away too much today, like it was Christmas. We were poor in possession and open play, making numerous mistakes that were hard to believe. It was a bad day at the office, and Middlesbrough were much better than us. This was my worst game since I arrived here. I expected a tougher challenge from my team against a good opponent, but we simply gave away too much, which translates to goals in this league."
'Absolutely brilliant' - Middlesbrough Reaction
Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg praised his team’s performance on BBC Radio Tees: "The players were absolutely brilliant today. We executed our plan effectively, making it difficult for Hull. We utilized the available space well, whether behind their defense or in front of the backline, excelling in counter-attacks and pressing. Regarding Alex Gilbert's first game since January, he is a clever player who quickly adapts to information on the pitch. He performed well in training, which is why I gave him the opportunity today. I'm looking forward to a good weekend; I plan to watch a lot of football tomorrow before returning to training on Sunday."
