Ipswich Town Earns Draw Against Bristol City
Jack Clarke netted his third goal in four matches as Ipswich Town rallied to secure a draw against Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
Despite dominating possession in the first half, Ipswich fell behind when centre-back Rob Atkinson scored with a header from a corner.
However, the visitors equalized shortly after the break when Chuba Akpom was fouled in the box, allowing Clarke to confidently convert his second penalty of the season, driving the ball straight down the middle.
In their previous away match against Blackburn, Ipswich's game was abandoned due to heavy rain with just 10 minutes remaining, but conditions were favorable this time. They nearly clinched a late victory, but substitute George Hirst's header went just over the bar.
Robins manager Gerhard Struber made adjustments to his lineup, introducing George Tanner and new signing Neto Borges, while captain Jason Knight is sidelined for several weeks due to a groin injury.
Ipswich made six changes to the team that defeated Portsmouth, with goalscorers Jaden Philogene and Hirst starting on the bench. Ivan Azon and Marcelino Nunez received their first starts for Ipswich, with Nunez notably switching from mismatched boots to a pair of blue ones in the second half, demonstrating his involvement early in the game with effective passing.
Clarke struggled to find space in the area, but it was Bristol City who took the lead as Ipswich failed to defend Anis Mehmeti's corner, allowing Atkinson to head the ball past keeper Alex Palmer from close range.
Ipswich's patient passing approach lacked the tempo to seriously threaten the Robins, often facing two solid defensive lines. A quick counter-attack nearly resulted in a goal for Borges, but he missed the target.
The first half was marred by stoppages for injuries, yet City continued to pose an aerial threat, with Rob Dickie's long throw flicked on at the near post, only for Ross McCrorie to head directly at the keeper.
After the break, Ipswich quickly leveled the score when McCrorie fouled Akpom in the box, allowing Clarke to score with composure past Radek Vitek.
Inspired by the equalizer, Ipswich increased their attacking urgency, particularly through Leif Davis on the left flank, although he received a yellow card for bringing down Mark Sykes during a City counter-attack.
Kieran McKenna made five substitutions, including withdrawing the ineffective Azon and Nunez. Bristol City almost regained the lead when the energetic Mehmeti set up Sinclair Armstrong, but Palmer was quick off his line to deny him.
Having conceded from a corner earlier, Ipswich nearly snatched a win from one of their own when Hirst was left unmarked, but he failed to keep his header down. Ipswich has now won just once in their last 14 away matches across the previous and current seasons.
Bristol City remains in fourth place despite their third consecutive game without a victory and will face QPR at home on Saturday. Meanwhile, 13th-placed Ipswich will host Norwich City in the East Anglia derby on Sunday afternoon.
