Bristol City Secures Victory Over Norwich City, Increasing Pressure on Liam Manning
Bristol City heightened the pressure on former manager Liam Manning with a decisive victory at Carrow Road, courtesy of Mark Sykes' goal in the second half.
The Canaries have now suffered defeats in all six of their home matches across league and cup competitions since Manning departed from Ashton Gate to take the helm at Norwich this summer.
Goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic kept Norwich in contention until a cross found substitute Sykes in the second half, who calmly slotted the ball home.
Norwich, coming off a loss to East Anglian rivals Ipswich Town prior to the international break, had their best chances through Emiliano Marcondes and Jack Stacey, but were unable to find the equalizer as Bristol City claimed their first victory in five matches, moving them up to sixth in the league table.
Despite his team's struggles this season, Manning, who guided Bristol City to the playoffs last year, stated he was not feeling sorry for himself ahead of the match.
He implemented four changes to the lineup, including midfielder Jeffrey Schlupp, who made only his second league start since transferring from Crystal Palace. Meanwhile, the Robins reinstated Ross McCrorie to the starting XI in place of Sykes.
Scott Twine nearly gave the Robins an early lead, sending a shot just over the bar. Last season, Bristol City won this fixture 2-0 under Manning, and they came close again when Neto Borges cut in from the left and struck the outside of the post with a curling shot.
While Norwich dominated possession, with Oscar Schwartau heading wide from a cross by Stacey, the visitors remained dangerous on the counterattack, forcing Kovacevic to save a shot from Emil Riis.
Kovacevic was called into action again after the break, stopping McCrorie’s left-footed attempt from reaching the top corner, while Vitek, on loan from Manchester United, made an excellent save to deny Marcondes shortly thereafter.
Although Kovacevic continued to thwart Norwich's efforts, he could not prevent Sykes' goal, which gave Bristol City the lead.
Anis Mehmeti had a shot deflected wide as the visitors sought a second goal, but it was Vitek’s save from Stacey that ensured Bristol City secured their third away victory of the season.
This defeat left Norwich in 20th place, without a win in six matches, as they prepare to face Derby County away on Tuesday evening, while sixth-placed Bristol City will host Southampton.
'Players Need to Take Responsibility' - Reaction
Norwich head coach Liam Manning expressed to BBC Radio Norfolk:
"We need a few players to step up and take ownership of their performances because the atmosphere is just too complacent. We have to change that. There were moments of good football, but we lacked aggression, purpose, and intent when trying to turn the game around.
"We strive to provide structure and clarity, but we also want to empower players to take responsibility on the pitch. If there's an opportunity to exploit space behind the defense, they need to take that risk. Too many players are shying away from responsibility and not showing enough bravery. I can't play the game for them; we provide game plans and solutions, but once the whistle blows, it's up to them to step up."
Bristol City manager Gerhard Struber shared his thoughts with BBC Radio Bristol:
"The game was played at a high level. We know Norwich has exceptional quality in their squad, and we anticipated a challenging match. Every player was incredibly focused and concentrated on their individual tasks, as well as how we functioned as a team, which was brilliant.
"In a match like this, momentum can shift, and you can't always have control and dominance in an away game at Norwich City. It's now vital for us to translate this performance into our home games; that should be our next step."
