Middlesbrough Falls Out of Automatic Promotion Spots Following Derby County Defeat
Middlesbrough has dropped out of the Championship's automatic promotion places after Bobby Clark secured a second-half winner for Derby County.
Jacob Widell Zetterstrom made a series of impressive saves that gave Derby hope of pulling off an upset against Boro, denying Hayden Hackney, Tommy Conway, and Delano Burgzorg on either side of halftime.
While Sol Brynn successfully kept Patrick Agyemang at bay early in the second half, Clark, on loan from RB Salzburg, clinched a hard-fought victory for the Rams with a composed finish, leaving Middlesbrough winless in their last four matches.
Kim Hellberg's team has struggled to find the back of the net in all four of those games, suffering three defeats, which has seen them slip to third place in the table, now nine points behind leaders Coventry City.
Derby, on the other hand, ended a three-match winless streak with this victory, marking only their second win in the last eight games, and moving them within five points of the playoff spots.
A combination of excellent goalkeeping from Zetterstrom and poor finishing from Boro prevented the home side from taking an early lead. The Swedish keeper made a sprawling save to deny Hackney before Conway squandered a significant opportunity moments later, failing to connect with his shot after Callum Brittain set him up with a well-placed ball into the box.
Conway had a better chance when Brittain found him in the penalty area again, but Zetterstrom was equal to the striker's side-footed volley, keeping the scores level.
It wasn't until the final minute of the first half that Derby tested Brynn, with a curled free-kick from Joe Ward forcing him into a near-post save.
After Zetterstrom started the second half with another crucial save from Burgzorg, Brynn produced the best save of the afternoon to deny Agyemang from a tight angle.
However, the visiting keeper was left exposed when Clark outpaced teammate Lars-Jorgen Salverson and a disorganized Boro defense to slot a low shot into the net from 12 yards out.
The situation worsened for Boro when Brittain limped off with an injury 15 minutes before the final whistle.
