Middlesbrough Snatches Late Equalizer Against Leicester City in Championship Clash
Captain Luke Ayling scored a dramatic equalizer in the sixth minute of added time, helping 10-man Middlesbrough secure a point against Leicester City in the Championship.
Ayling's first goal for Boro came from a deep cross by Callum Brittain, just when it seemed Rob Edwards' team would suffer consecutive league defeats. This goal followed the dismissal of defender Alfie Jones for a professional foul.
Despite the draw, Middlesbrough slipped out of the top two positions, now trailing second-placed Stoke City by one point.
For Leicester City and head coach Marti Cifuentes, it was a frustrating outcome, as they were on track for a much-needed victory after Jordan Ayew converted a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time. Although the draw ended a streak of three consecutive losses, Leicester has only managed one win in their last ten matches, leaving them in the bottom half of the table.
Following a disappointing home defeat to Blackburn Rovers, Cifuentes made four changes to his starting lineup in search of a winning strategy. Leicester had a chance to take the lead when Luke Thomas delivered a dangerous free-kick, but Caleb Okoli failed to capitalize from close range.
The Foxes gained momentum just before halftime when Boro midfielder Hayden Hackney committed a needless handball, allowing Ayew to score from the penalty spot.
In the second half, Leicester appeared to be content to hold onto their lead, but, reminiscent of previous home games against Wrexham and Portsmouth, they were ultimately equalized against.
Middlesbrough had started the Championship season strongly but faced a challenging few days, having been easily defeated by Watford and dealing with rumors linking Edwards to the vacant head coach position at Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Despite their high ranking, Middlesbrough has struggled with scoring, with four players sharing the top-scorer title with just two goals each. Their best first-half opportunity fell to Slovakia forward David Strelec, who, without a goal in seven games, failed to lift the ball over goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk after the latter mishandled a shot from Matt Targett.
Stolarczyk did not return for the second half after receiving treatment, and Asmir Begovic made his debut for the Foxes at the age of 38, marking his first game since playing for QPR in April 2024 and his tenth club in English football.
Begovic appeared to have secured the victory for Leicester when he denied Tommy Conway in a one-on-one situation, but he was powerless to stop Ayling's late header. The 34-year-old celebrated exuberantly with the traveling supporters after scoring his first goal since August 2023.
