Newcastle United Faces Painful Defeat at Sunderland
Bruno Guimaraes has experienced defeat before. The Newcastle United captain even shed tears following his team's loss in the 2023 Carabao Cup final against Manchester United. However, he described Sunday’s derby loss against Sunderland as the most painful moment of his four-year tenure with the club.
"The whole message in the changing room today was 'do it for the fans,' and we didn’t,” Guimaraes expressed. “It’s so embarrassing for me and frustrating because we know we have a better team than them. It’s clear to me. But we didn’t perform like a better team today. It makes me feel angry.”
This 1-0 defeat felt more damaging than previous away losses to Marseille, Brentford, and West Ham in recent weeks.
Head coach Eddie Howe also expressed his disappointment, apologizing multiple times during the post-match press conference. Losing to a bitter rival is always tough, but the lackluster nature of this defeat against a newly-promoted team was particularly disheartening for Howe.
"Criticism comes with every defeat, but this one will be louder and stronger due to the game's significance," he acknowledged. "We fully acknowledge that, and that’s why it hurts so much. It’s disappointing for our supporters, and I’m sorry."
A Different Sunderland Compared to 2024
No wonder heads were bowed as Newcastle players and staff exited the stadium after the game. The atmosphere was a stark contrast to a few hours earlier. Rather than being intimidated by the hostile reception from Sunderland fans outside, several Newcastle players appeared relaxed, smiling as they disembarked from the team bus.
Dan Burn, who later required hospitalization due to a rib injury sustained in a challenge with Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele, seemed to taunt the crowd by cupping his ear. Guimaraes, with earphones in, was seen bobbing his head as he entered the players’ entrance.
Several players who participated in Newcastle's last victory at the Stadium of Light, during the FA Cup a couple of seasons ago, highlighted the fixture's importance. However, this match was always destined to be different against a transformed Sunderland side under coach Regis Le Bris.
Sunderland has taken points from five of the current top six teams for a reason. "We are gaining more experience, and the squad is improving," Le Bris stated after the match. "We are young, and this is our first season in the Premier League. After tough experiences against Liverpool and Manchester City, we are growing. So I’m not really surprised."
Struggles in Front of Goal
Sunderland secured their victory with an unexpected goalscorer. Nick Woltemade inadvertently scored an own goal, heading the ball into his net less than a minute into the second half. Newcastle never recovered from that setback.
Despite having one more shot on target than Sunderland in a match lacking significant goalmouth action, the statistics did not reflect the reality of the game. Newcastle appeared more focused on being defensively compact rather than ambitious, failing to pose a threat on the counter-attack through forwards Woltemade, Anthony Gordon, and Anthony Elanga.
The closest Newcastle came to equalizing was when Guimaraes took a shot from outside the area, which was comfortably saved by Robin Roefs. Goals had not been a significant issue for Newcastle recently, as other players had stepped up to ease the burden on the frontline. Lewis Miley scored against Leverkusen, Guimaraes netted against Burnley and Tottenham, and Malick Thiaw even scored twice against Everton. However, no one managed to find the net at the Stadium of Light.
"We were not there," Guimaraes lamented. "No shooting, no crossing, no passing. We should have demanded the ball more. We just accepted the way they played, with long balls, and they won the duels. In derbies, we must win those duels."
'You Never Want One Game to Define Your Season'
Frustrations boiled over in the dying moments of the match. Joe Willock received a yellow card for knocking Roefs over, while Thiaw was also cautioned after clashing with Wilson Isidor. By then, deep into stoppage time, the visitors were resigned to their fate on a challenging afternoon.
This latest setback comes in a stop-start campaign, and Howe cannot afford for the ramifications of this defeat to affect the remainder of the season, especially with Newcastle currently sitting in 12th place.
With a crucial Carabao Cup quarter-final against Fulham approaching on Wednesday night, and the need to secure a playoff spot for the Champions League round of 16, Howe emphasized, "You never want one game to define your season. If anything, you want it to define it positively and come back full steam ahead to showcase your class. That’s what we must do."
