Newcastle United's Eddie Howe Reflects on Team's Inconsistency
Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has expressed his frustration over the unpredictability of his team's performances, describing it as a "horrible feeling" not knowing what to expect from his players.
Howe had believed that Newcastle had turned a corner following a victory against Manchester City in November and a recent unbeaten streak of four games. However, the team's disappointing 1-0 defeat to arch-rivals Sunderland has shaken that confidence.
In the match at the Stadium of Light, Newcastle delivered a lackluster performance, as Howe opted for a more compact approach rather than an aggressive one.
Currently, Newcastle sits in 12th place in the Premier League, having secured only one away league win since mid-April. Howe appeared visibly frustrated as he reflected on his team's inconsistency a few days after the loss.
"It's a horrible feeling because when you enter a game, you want your players to give everything they have within their soul and body to achieve a positive result," Howe stated on Tuesday. "That’s the only thing I ever ask of a player. I trust their abilities once they step onto the pitch with that mindset to deliver a strong performance.
"There have been several instances this season where I’ve left a game feeling uncertain about that mentality. It’s about understanding that you represent yourself and your families when you step onto the pitch. Your job is to do your best, and I believe we’ve lost a bit of that drive. It’s up to us to find a way to regain that cohesion."
Newcastle has struggled to bounce back effectively from defeats this season, with losses to Brentford, West Ham, and Marseille in recent months. Howe emphasized that this is not the approach he desires for his team.
The team will need to regroup quickly as they prepare to face Fulham in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
Captain Bruno Guimaraes acknowledged that Newcastle won’t be able to fully rectify their issues until the next Tyne-Wear derby in March, having described the weekend's performance as a "mess."
Howe noted that while discussions off the pitch are important, they pale in comparison to the team’s preparation. "Bruno’s comments were mostly accurate initially," he said. "I don’t think we were a mess; we were well organized, but we failed to deliver the performance we aimed for.
"Bruno is very emotional, which contributes to his success as an outstanding player and leader for us. It’s crucial to ensure our messaging is clear to the public. Our focus now is on the future; we cannot change the past, but we can influence what comes next, starting today."
Unfortunately for Newcastle, they will be without key defender Dan Burn, who is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks due to a rib injury and a punctured lung sustained during the derby.
