Newcastle United Secures First Win of the Season with Woltemade's Debut Goal
Nick Woltemade marked an unforgettable debut as his powerful header led Newcastle United to their first victory of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The German forward, who made a record £69 million transfer from Stuttgart on August 30, received a warm reception from the fans at St James' Park.
Woltemade quickly repaid the supporters’ faith, scoring in the 29th minute. He evaded Wolves defender Emmanuel Agbadou to head in Jacob Murphy's well-placed cross, sending the ball past goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
Newcastle continued to push for a second goal, with Sandro Tonali striking the inside of the post from 20 yards just before half-time.
Wolves, who had started the match brightly, struggled to regain momentum after conceding. They had opportunities early on, with Rodrigo Gomes and Hwang Hee-chan both being thwarted by Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Unfortunately for Vitor Pereira's side, their search for their first point of the season continues.
Newcastle Analysis: Woltemade's Impact
Newcastle has desperately needed a goalscorer this season.
With Alexander Isak sidelined and no other recognized forwards available, Eddie Howe's team had not scored in two of their first three matches, managing only two points in that span.
Enter Woltemade.
Although Newcastle had hoped to ease him into the squad since he had never played outside Germany before, circumstances forced him into action. The club had signed proven Premier League striker Yoane Wissa on deadline day to help share the load after Isak's record transfer to Liverpool, but Wissa suffered a knee injury while on international duty with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As a result, head coach Howe had no choice but to start Woltemade against Wolves, just days after he had begun training with his new teammates.
Woltemade, standing at 6 feet 6 inches, is not a conventional target man; rather, he is a skilled technician capable of maneuvering in tight spaces and facilitating play. His debut goal showcased the qualities of a classic number nine.
Murphy, who assisted many goals for Isak last season, provided an excellent cross into the box that Woltemade converted with a powerful header.
This moment prompted the home crowd to chant: "Woltemade, Woltemade, ole, ole, ole," and he received a standing ovation when he was substituted for William Osula midway through the second half.
Forwards are revered at Newcastle, and it seems Woltemade has already captured the hearts of the fans.
Wolves Analysis: A Historic Struggle
Wolves made history on Saturday, but not in a positive way.
They have now lost their first four league matches of the season, marking the first time this has occurred in the club's 127-year history in the Football League or Premier League.
After falling behind, Wolves appeared unable to recover, despite a promising start.
Just minutes into the match, Wolves threatened when Rodrigo Gomes' shot was saved by Newcastle's Nick Pope. From the resulting corner, Hwang's half-volley was also stopped by Pope.
This early display gave the away supporters hope, prompting them to question the home crowd about their "famous atmosphere." Wolves posed a threat with their pace before Newcastle took the lead.
Gomes missed a close-range opportunity, and Newcastle's Fabian Schar had to make a crucial tackle to deny Tolu Arokodare a tap-in on his debut.
Wolves missed a crucial chance to score first, and they will eagerly anticipate the return of talisman Jorgen Stand Larsen, who missed this match due to an Achilles injury.
Wolves are in urgent need of a turnaround.
