Newcastle United Signs Yoane Wissa for £55 Million
Newcastle United has officially signed forward Yoane Wissa from Brentford for a total fee of £55 million.
The deal for the DR Congo international, who netted 19 Premier League goals last season, comprises an initial £50 million plus an additional £5 million in performance-related add-ons.
Brentford had previously rejected two offers from Newcastle for Wissa earlier in the summer transfer window.
This transfer follows Newcastle's sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a British record fee of £125 million.
Wissa will don the number nine jersey at St James' Park as he embarks on this new chapter in his career.
The signing concludes a lengthy transfer saga, during which the 28-year-old publicly expressed his desire to leave Brentford in a statement released on Sunday.
Wissa urged Brentford to honor their commitment to allow him to leave, claiming the club had been obstructive in his pursuit of a move to Newcastle.
Earlier in the transfer window, Wissa had removed all references to Brentford from his Instagram account.
In a statement on the club's website, Wissa expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League. I’m very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I’ve got dreams, I’ve got faith, and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can’t wait to get started."
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe commented, "Yoane is a player we have admired for some time, and we’re delighted to have him on board. Wissa joined Brentford in 2021 and has scored 49 goals in 149 appearances for the club.
He is the second striker signed by Newcastle in recent days, following the club-record acquisition of Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart on a six-year contract.
Wissa is the sixth senior signing for Newcastle this summer, joining Woltemade, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, winger Anthony Elanga, midfielder Jacob Ramsey, and center-back Malick Thiaw.
