Paul Mullin Returns to Wrexham as Loan at Wigan Ends
Paul Mullin's loan spell with Wigan Athletic has been prematurely concluded, and the striker is set to return to Wrexham this week.
Manager Phil Parkinson confirmed the news following Sunday's 2-1 victory over Derby County, which brought the North Wales club within a point of the Championship play-offs.
"Mulls' loan spell has been terminated," Parkinson stated. "We will have a discussion with him this week upon his return. He needs to train this week as he has missed several training sessions."
Mullin, 31, has been instrumental in Wrexham's ascent, contributing significantly to the club's three consecutive promotions under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. He has netted 110 goals in 170 appearances and featured prominently in the documentary series, Welcome to Wrexham.
Following Wrexham's promotion to the Championship last season, Mullin joined League One side Wigan on loan for the 2025-26 campaign. During his time with Wigan, he scored five goals in 26 appearances but was notably absent from the last four matchday squads.
"I’ve only had a brief conversation with him over the Christmas period," Parkinson added. "We haven’t had much training lately due to the packed schedule and staying in hotels. I’ll connect with him on the way back today and we’ll have a thorough discussion when he returns this week."
Mullin, who ranks as Wrexham's seventh-highest scorer of all time, is contracted at the Racecourse Ground until the summer of 2027. However, he has faced persistent injury issues in recent seasons, including problems with his lower back, knee, and hamstring.
He joined Wrexham in the summer of 2021 after moving down from League One side Shrewsbury Town. In the 2022-23 season, he scored 38 league goals, helping Wrexham secure the National League title, and followed that up with 24 goals in League Two. Despite his strong fan support, including a cameo in the Marvel film Deadpool & Wolverine, Mullin spent much of last season sidelined as Wrexham advanced to the second tier, scoring only five goals in 32 appearances. His last match for the club was as a substitute in a 2-2 draw against Peterborough in February 2025.
Wigan Athletic has also seen another player depart early this month, with Swansea City recalling 26-year-old Welsh midfielder Ollie Cooper.
