Preston North End Secures Crucial Win Against Oxford United
Daniel Jebbison netted his fifth goal of the season, propelling Preston North End closer to a Championship play-off spot with a victory over Oxford United.
The Bournemouth striker, who had previously scored an equalizer against league leaders Coventry City, extended the Lilywhites' advantage against an Oxford side struggling with relegation, having won only once in their last nine matches.
Defender Jordan Storey opened the scoring for Preston with a header in the first half, and Jebbison's goal appeared to set the visitors on course for their first win against a team managed by "bogey manager" Gary Rowett in 16 attempts.
However, uncertainty crept in when Brian De Keersmaecker scored for Oxford. Despite this setback, a combination of strong goalkeeping from Daniel Iversen and solid defensive work ensured that Paul Heckingbottom's team secured a vital three points.
Oxford fans may have been encouraged by their recent record against Preston, boasting six wins in their last ten encounters, hoping it would help them escape a precarious position just above the relegation zone.
Rowett, who had never lost to Preston as a manager with eight wins and seven draws from 15 previous encounters across his tenures at Birmingham, Derby, Stoke, Millwall, and Oxford, added to the optimism.
Nonetheless, Preston proved difficult to defeat on the road, having won four of their last eight away matches. They took the lead after 26 minutes at the Kassam Stadium.
After a corner was partially cleared, Storey remained in the box and, when Thierry Small delivered a deep cross to the far post, the towering defender managed to direct his header through the legs of goalkeeper Jamie Cumming, breaking the deadlock.
Oxford responded positively, but crucial blocks from Storey and Harrison Armstrong, along with a brilliant reflex save by Iversen from a Ciaron Brown header, kept them at bay.
At the start of the second half, substitute Stan Mills crossed for Nik Prelec, but the Slovenian striker failed to convert. Moments later, Preston doubled their lead with a well-crafted move, as Alfie Devine played a one-two with Lewis Dobbin before pulling the ball back for Jebbison to finish neatly.
Oxford's response was swift; within four minutes, they capitalized on some hesitant defending from Andrew Hughes, with De Keersmaecker finishing confidently from the edge of the box.
Preston was forced to defend resolutely to maintain their lead, with Iversen making another impressive save from a Will Vaulks volley before Will Lankshear struck the crossbar with his header.
