PSG Manager Supports Decision to Drop Donnarumma for Super Cup
Paris St-Germain manager Luis Enrique has confirmed that the club supports his decision to omit goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from the squad for the UEFA Super Cup.
Donnarumma, who was instrumental in PSG's Champions League triumph last season, was not included in the team that traveled to Udine for Wednesday's match against Tottenham. Instead, Lucas Chevalier and Renato Marin were selected as the goalkeepers.
In a social media post, the 26-year-old expressed his disappointment, stating he felt "disheartened" by his exclusion.
Enrique explained that his choice was based on the need for a "different profile" of goalkeeper. "I have the full support of my club as we strive to find the best solution," he said during a news conference on Tuesday. "Making this decision was challenging. I hold Donnarumma in high regard; he is among the best goalkeepers available and an even better person. However, we were seeking a different profile, and such decisions are never easy to make."
Later on Tuesday, Donnarumma reflected on his future with the Ligue 1 club, expressing uncertainty about playing for PSG again. "I hope to have the chance to look the fans at Parc des Princes in the eyes one last time and say goodbye properly," he wrote. "If that doesn't happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will always cherish it."
PSG captain Marquinhos also praised Donnarumma, noting, "It’s always difficult; I’ve been here for 12 or 13 years and have seen other players leave. Unfortunately, that’s part of football. The only thing we can do is give everything to the players until the last moment they are with us. Players may come and go, but the history remains. Gigi is part of that history, and we are proud of him. What he achieved last season was incredible, and we owe him a lot. If he departs, we extend our heartfelt thanks to him."
