QPR Secures Narrow Victory Over Blackburn at Ewood Park
Blackburn Rovers continued to struggle at home this season as Paul Smyth's second-half header secured a hard-fought Championship victory for Queens Park Rangers (QPR) at Ewood Park.
The Northern Ireland forward made an immediate impact, directing Ilias Chair's cross back across goal and into the bottom corner just seven minutes after coming on as a substitute.
This solitary moment of composure marked the only goal in a match where both teams squandered several clear opportunities.
The victory propels QPR into the top half of the table, while Blackburn remains in 18th place, having won only once at home this season.
Following an impressive 3-2 win over Hull City on Saturday, QPR began the match on the offensive in Lancashire. However, they were forced to make a first-half substitution in goal when Ben Hamer collided with teammate Steve Cook and was unable to continue.
Chair was denied by an excellent save from Blackburn goalkeeper Aynsley Pears, while Kristi Montgomery blocked Karamoko Dembele's goal-bound shot, and Jonathan Varane headed a Chair corner over the bar.
Koki Saito was pivotal in QPR's attacking play and nearly won a penalty after being brought down in the box following a run past Blackburn defender Lewis Miller, as QPR dominated the first half.
However, Blackburn had their first significant chance in the 41st minute. Ryoya Morishita delivered a cross from the right following some neat build-up play, but Andri Gudjohnsen, who had scored the match-winner against Preston, failed to find the target after getting ahead of his marker.
After the break, Blackburn improved, displaying greater intensity and attacking intent. Gudjohnsen headed wide and was later denied by QPR substitute goalkeeper Paul Nardi.
Blackburn missed a couple of goalmouth scrambles as the match opened up, and their inability to capitalize on these chances proved costly when Chair and Smyth combined for the decisive goal.
Smyth almost extended QPR's lead shortly after, but his first-time volley was kept out by a combination of Pears and the post, while Blackburn failed to equalize in the limited time remaining.
Manager Reactions: A Strange Game
Blackburn head coach Valerien Ismael commented to BBC Radio Lancashire:
"It was a typical 0-0 game, I would say. We had better chances before their goal, especially in the second half, but their goalkeeper made a crucial save. We gave away the goal too easily, which is a significant frustration for me. The players need to learn to at least secure a point; every point counts in this league. This defeat is painful, and it feels like we are not progressing. It’s disappointing how we lost possession. We need to turn our home fortunes around, or it will be challenging. In tight games, we struggle to secure points and maintain composure. Players need to take responsibility and play to our strengths more consistently."
QPR head coach Julien Stephan shared his thoughts with BBC Radio London:
"It was a strange game, to be honest. We started well and had good opportunities in the first half, but we made poor decisions. At half-time, we emphasized the importance of being focused and clinical in the second half, which we achieved with a great ball from Ilias Chair and a nice finish from Smyth. I must also highlight Paul Nardi’s excellent save at 0-0, which was crucial for us. I want to congratulate him as I made a tough decision to change the goalkeeper recently. He is a fantastic player who showcased his abilities today. We need to enjoy this moment and stay focused on our upcoming matches, starting with Norwich away, followed by three games the following week."
