Sheffield Wednesday Faces Additional Points Deduction and Ownership Ban

Sheffield Wednesday has received a further six-point deduction from the English Football League (EFL) due to regulatory breaches, leaving the club 27 points adrift from safety in the Championship.

Former owner Dejphon Chansiri has also been banned from owning or serving as a director at any EFL club for three years.

According to BBC Radio Sheffield, this latest deduction stems from the club's failure to pay players in March, May, and June, along with other outstanding payments to staff and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The Owls were initially penalized with a 12-point deduction in October when the club entered administration.

With this new ruling, Sheffield Wednesday now finds itself at minus 10 points, significantly behind Swansea, who are currently in 21st place.

While investigations into the club's conduct during the current season are ongoing, the EFL has stated that it does not intend to impose any further points deductions.

In a statement on the Sheffield Wednesday website, the EFL confirmed, "Sheffield Wednesday FC is to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL Regulations related to payment obligations. Mr. Dejphon Chansiri is prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL club for a period of three years."

The statement continued, "While inquiries into alleged breaches during the 2025-26 season, prior to the club entering administration, are still ongoing, the league confirms that it is not seeking any additional points deductions from the club."

Additionally, the EFL and Sheffield Wednesday are in discussions regarding the club's appeal against a fee restriction, which is currently set to remain in effect until the end of the winter 2027 transfer window. This issue is expected to be resolved as part of the club's exit from administration.

Chansiri led a Thai consortium that took over Sheffield Wednesday in 2015, but the club’s entry into administration effectively marks the end of his nearly decade-long ownership.

Administrators are currently working to identify a preferred bidder to take over the club, with hopes of finalizing a deal by Friday.
