Southampton Advances to FA Cup Fourth Round Despite Second-Half Struggles
Southampton secured their spot in the FA Cup fourth-round draw after withstanding a second-half comeback from Doncaster Rovers.
The Saints achieved their first victory in seven matches, with Cameron Bragg netting his inaugural senior goal, while Cameron Archer and Kuryu Matsuki contributed to a comfortable halftime lead.
However, the Championship side eased off after the break, allowing the League One strugglers to capitalize as Matty Pearson and Jordan Gibson both found the net, narrowing the deficit to just one goal.
Saints manager Tonda Eckert made crucial substitutions, bringing on Nathan Wood and Leo Scienza to bolster his fatigued squad. They were thankful to debutant goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, who made a remarkable reaction save from veteran Billy Sharp in stoppage time.
Both teams were eager for a win, having endured six-match winless streaks dating back to early December.
Peretz, who joined on loan from Bayern Munich earlier this week, was largely untroubled as Southampton quickly took control at the Eco-Power Stadium.
Bragg opened the scoring just eight minutes into the match, driving at a retreating Rovers defense and passing to Matsuki, before converting the rebound after the Japanese midfielder's deflected shot was parried by goalkeeper Thimothee Lo-Tutala.
Archer doubled the lead, recovering from a foul claim to slip the ball through Robbie Gotts' legs and firing a shot that deflected off Jamie Sterry and looped over Lo-Tutala.
Lo-Tutala denied Archer a second goal, and Matsuki sent a free header wide as Southampton dominated play. Peretz finally saw action with a solid save from Gibson's well-struck 30-yard free kick.
What initially seemed like a straightforward match for the team 32 places higher in the Football League took a turn just three minutes into the second half, as Pearson headed home to reduce the deficit. Frankie Okoronkwo, sensing a comeback, fired narrowly wide.
When Owen Bailey set up Gibson, he struck a shot between Peretz and his near post, putting the game in jeopardy for Southampton.
Eckert's substitutions appeared to restore some control to the visitors, but Rovers mounted a significant effort in stoppage time, forcing Peretz into two quick saves. Darren Robinson nearly marked his debut with a dramatic equalizer, sending his shot just over the bar.
'We need improved resilience' - Eckert's Reaction
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert spoke to BBC Radio Solent:
"The FA Cup is a very special tournament and never an easy one, as you have nothing to lose when you go down. I’m very pleased we’re in the next round.
"In the end, there were patterns we have seen all season. We need to ensure we improve our resilience on set plays.
"It was a very good first half. The second half could have been better, but we’re in the next round.
"We have a good squad, but we have seen that flow in a game before; even at 3-0 up at halftime, we have conceded from a corner and started to suffer.
On Daniel Peretz: "It’s not easy coming in after just a couple of training sessions with new teammates and having to learn their names and defensive tactics, but he had an excellent game—a very promising start."
