Southampton Coach Urges Team to Fight Back Amidst Struggles
Under pressure, head coach Will Still has urged Southampton to stop feeling sorry for themselves and to "shut up and get on with it."
After a disappointing defeat to Blackburn on Saturday, where the team squandered a 1-0 lead, fans expressed their frustration, resulting in Southampton dropping to 20th place, just three points above the relegation zone.
Under Still's management, the team has managed only one win in their last 11 league matches and has recorded just four victories in 47 games since their promotion to the Premier League in May 2024.
In an interview with BBC Radio Solent, Still emphasized the need for the club to rally together, stating, "We’ve got to fight back. It’s time for the whole club to fight back a bit. This scenario is not new; it was happening last season too."
He continued, "As a club, we need to stand up, fight back, and demonstrate what this club is about, rather than complain and make excuses for our struggles."
Still further highlighted the importance of managing games effectively, stating, "We need to stop feeling sorry for ourselves – that’s one thing I can’t stand. In a blunt way, shut up and get on with it."
Looking ahead to their upcoming match against seventh-placed Preston North End on Saturday, Still noted that his squad had engaged in "a few ugly and honest truths" following their defeat at Ewood Park against a team that is just below them in the standings.
However, the 33-year-old coach stressed, "It’s not a time for finger-pointing; it’s about the football club as a whole. Let’s push and be positive. Things have gone too far in the wrong direction, and we need to take action."
