Sporting Triumphs Over Ten-Man Marseille in Champions League
Sporting Lisbon staged a dramatic comeback to defeat ten-man Marseille in the Champions League.
In the 86th minute, Alisson Santos cut inside and curled a shot with his right foot, rewarding the Portuguese side for their persistent pressure in the second half.
Geny Catamo’s curling effort in the 69th minute had earlier equalized for Marseille, cancelling out Igor Paixao’s stunning first-half goal from the edge of the penalty box.
The equalizer came after Marseille’s Emerson received a second yellow card in first-half stoppage time for diving in an attempt to win a penalty, leaving Roberto de Zerbi’s team to compete with ten players for the entire second half.
Initially, the Ligue 1 side appeared set for a second European victory this season after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang assisted Paixao, who netted his third goal of the competition this year.
However, Sporting’s determination ultimately secured them the win, elevating them to 12th place in the standings with two victories and one loss, while Marseille remains in 18th place with two losses and one win.
